Our Sunday ride started at the shop. We lost one rider at Lonsdale
with a mechanical problem but luckily we had no other troubles not even
a flat tire. Not everyone has been training for the STP so the pace
was leisurely, around 22 kph. After crossing the Lions Gate bridge we
rode through Stanley Park, down the hill around the Tea House and out
Beach Ave.
We crossed the Burrard Bridge using the new bike lane. Does anybody
find this is an inmprovement? On the other side of the bridge we
turned south on the Cypress bike trail which runs to Matthews Ave where
it turns East. Two blocks later we turn south again on Angus Dr.
We followed the bike path south to SW Marine Drive were someone
suggested we try and find the new bridge that is attached to the Sky
Train. The bridge is easy to find from SW Marine Drive or 70th Ave
but the map trace does not help since I forget to turn on the GPS until
after we had crossed the bridge into Richmond. The group consensus was
that the Arthur Laing Bridge which we came back on is a better way to
get to the No 1 road which leads to Steveston.
Arriving at Steveston Park we stopped for coffee and a light lunch. We
then proceeded to follow the coast line eastward to Woodward's landing
park where we turned north on No 5 Road. There are two very
interesting churches on No. 5 road. We stopped and briefly toured the
Buddest Temple, shown on the GPS trace. The Sikh temple is just a few
blocks further North.
We followed No. 5 road north to the Westminster Highway turned west
toward Garden City Rd then followed Garden City Rd north to Cambie Rd.
We turned West again on Cambie Rd until we reached river road. We rode
on River rd south to No 2 Rd where we picked up the bike path north
along Russ Baker Way. This route avoids the congestion around
Bridgeport Rd which would have been a bit shorter. Russ Baker Way
leads in turn to the Aurthur Laing Bridge. We took the Granville St
Exit and crossed over to SW Marine Drive using the crosswalk at Mitton
Street.
By now we discovered we were getting a little short of time so instead
of proceeding along SW Marine Drive to UBC we took the direct route
back the way we came.
This
link shows the map for our other Steveston expedition which may
have been a bit longer as it finished with a tour of UBC and the
beaches.
Arriving back at Stanley Park we once again took the direct route past
the Pavilion, rather than the scenic route around the park. John and
I succumbed to the temptation of another stop over at the Pavilion as
the remainder of the group hurried home.
All in all it was a beautiful day. We had time for some touring, some
sightseeing even some bike riding. By the time we reached the shop we
had just about 95K on our computers. Riding home I circled the block
once or twice to make it an even 100.
