Gov. Gibbons is once again touting himself for his efforts to resolve
the budget problem in a fair manner. In his State of the State speech,
Gibbons also said he is doing so without hurting the most vulnerable
citizens of the state, while presenting a budget that cuts millions in
aid to Nevada's poor families, children, disabled, elderly and sick.
I have some questions for the governor. In a state with a bare-bones
Medicaid program, is it fair to cut Medicaid further? Is it fair to
cut aid to agencies working to protect children and families from
abuse and poverty? Is it fair to make cuts so social service agencies
can't adequate serve their populations due to high case loads?
Gibbons says it is not fair to raise taxes, yet it is OK to cut aid to
our most vulnerable people. Yet there are ways to implement new taxes
that will not hurt the poor and most vulnerable: a tax structure that
is fair.
Just who is Gibbons being fair to? Certainly not the children, poor
and medically needy of this state.
