Before we go to The Genetics Society for permission to do it, we would like to
ask the community for a preference using this form. The Steering Committee discussed some possibilities on a recent meeting and here are two ideas we would like you to consider (names are temporary):
1. NorthernBUG Extra
This would be a one-day, hands-on training/workshop, aimed at PGRs/ECRs. For example (and it is just an example), a session on analysis of 10x single-cell data in the morning, and a session on building a snakemake pipeline in the afternoon. We think that such combination of best practices with some commercial platforms would also allow for extra funding (e.g. the first session could be run and paid for by 10x, the other by us).
2. NorthernBUG Bioinformatics Clinic
This would be a somewhat less structured, whole-day session where participants (PGRs/ECRs) would come with their data/problem, and colleagues with expertise in a number of bioinformatics/data analysis topics would be present, floating around in the room for an ad-hoc hands-on advice. The emphasis would be firmly on tinkering and pointing to right directions and demonstrating best practices rather than running someone’s full PhD analysis in a day. Depending on the availability of people with expertise, this session may have a more or less focused "theme".
In either case, we envision time for participants to have some time to present their ongoing issue and challenges in analysis (and *not* ready-made presentations on some results) to the other participants for advice and moral support.
This form contains a poll - please select your preference and (if you want) share some ideas/comments on this idea.
We anticipate this extra session would happen in the beginning of 2024, assuming the Society will let us go with it.
Best,
The NorthernBUG Steering Committee
