I'd like to begin a discussion focused on people's thoughts and
experiences as regards appropriate and productive broadleaf tree
species for coppice management in the northeast.

Some of those that I have witnessed experienced include:

black locust
red maple
hickory
hazel
poplar
willow
white oak
alder

certainly there are many more but it's a gorgeous day and I should be
outside

Also, with that in mind - it'd be great to include the potential uses
for each listed species. It's not enough just to grow/manage a tree
as a coppice stool - we need a projected goal/product in mind
especially seeing as how the establishment and management of a coppice
stand is a significant long term investment (300+ years).

Thanks to all

Mark,
Thanks for starting this.
I would also throw out
Boxelder and
Paulownia (for the very warmest NE sites - zone6/5) as having a
vigorous response (at least in the short term) to coppicing based on
my observations.

Maybe a useful way to organize and unite our knowledge would be great
to generate a spreadsheet (excel?) and have these species entered
along with any data on their spacing, uses, needs, etc. and links to
more information. Something that we could all access and ad to. Or a
wiki site?
