Dear Sir/Madam,

University College Association of Debaters (UCAD) of the University College Lahore Pakistan, takes great pleasure in inviting you to the 10th Annual Shahjiwana International Debating Championship (SIDC) 2013. The tentative dates for the competition are from the 25th of January 2013 to the 28th of January 2012.

Every year UCAD hosts its own parliamentary-style debate: 'SHAHJIWANA INTERNATIONAL DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIP (SIDC)', which shall witness its 17th edition this year. Over the last 17 years, Shahjiwana International has achieved the status of Pakistan’s most prominent parliamentary-style debating competition. In 2003 UCL became the first Pakistani institution to host a debating competition with teams participating from India, Srilanka and Bangladesh, thus making SIDC an international experience for all those who were a part of it. UCL had teams coming from India and Colombo University in 2009 as well. Additionally, apart from hosting international teams, orators of University College Lahore have played a key role in building debating ties across South East Asian and further internationally. In 2004 our speakers were ranked as the top speakers while competing at a South-Asian debating championship hosted by the National Law School of India (NLSIU). In 2005, our team won the very same competition. Moreover, our team has represented at the Worlds and UADC (formerly the AUDC). In 2009 the UCL team qualified as the Octa-finalist at NLSIU, and one of our speakers was amongst the top ten speakers at the competition.

This year we aim to host even more teams from across Asia and perhaps even the rest of the globe to provide a unique platform for debaters. Moreover, the level of Adjudication should be of the very highest standards given we are confident that Sharmila Parmanand, a Chief Adjudicator at the Worlds will be part of the core team this year, amongst other reputed judges from the Asian region. Given the drastic improvement in the Pakistani circuit in recent years, added to the other factors mentioned above, this competition is being built up to be perhaps the finest our country has hosted to date. In order to live up to that billing, participation of quality International teams such as your own will go a long way.

The format of the debates will be in accordance with the World Universities Style Debating. The debate will consist of 4 teams of 2 persons each. The teams will be as follows:

1.    Opening Government
2.    Opening Opposition
3.    Closing Government
4.    Closing Opposition

Members will deliver a substantive speech of 7 minutes duration and should offer points of information when the members of the opposing teams are speaking. Detailed rules can be found on the World Universities Debating website:
http://flynn.debating.net/Sydrules.htm/

Each institution can bring a maximum of 3 teams. However, every institution that brings along more than one team will have to bring an adjudicator (or adjudicators), according to the n-1 rule: if you bring 2 teams then you must bring one adjudicator. If you have a problem bringing the required number of adjudicators it would be advisable to let the management committee know in advance.

Moreover, we welcome individual adjudicators and trainers to our tournament and will be providing boarding, lodging and transportation facilities for the duration of your stay, including entertainment and social events.

We enthusiastically look forward to your participation which will not only add colour to the event but also provide an enriching debating experience with the interaction of highly talented individuals from all over Asia and potentially the globe. It is through such initiatives and your participation that we aim to promote debates within our country. We look forward to speedy responses so we can initiate the visa process immediately, and ensure that the visas arrive in time for the teams and adjudicators to attend the tournament. Kindly let us know of your participation at the earliest.

We will be more than happy to handle any queries you may have. If there are any formalities that we need to take care of, then please let us know at the earliest.

Looking forward to seeing you at SIDC 2013!! .

Schedule, registration cost and other details will be soon uploaded on website

Yours Sincerely,

UCAD Team!
