I, with the help of Joe Sabatini, have been speaking up for 4th Street being the pre-1937 route of Route 66.  Since we are celebrating the centennial of Route 66, I want to be sure that 4th Street is not ignored, since it was the route 100 years ago.  For those who are interested, here is some new information about possible projects on 4th Street that have already been done on Central.  We have thought of a possible mural site.  The sign inventory is very interesting - lots of empty frames that could be reworked.  I am forwarding an email I received from Dr. Shelle Sanchez and one from Terry Brunner of Metropolitan Redevelopment Area Agency.  4th Street has a MRA plan.

Peggy,

Here are few updates that I think will interest you.

Sign Inventory: With the support of Friends of Orphan Signs, the Department of Arts & Culture does now have a sign inventory for 4th St.  I have included that as an attachment here.

Route 66 Mural project (partnership between MRA & APS): As Terry Bruner noted in earlier emails, this collaborative project with APS was developed with in partnership with APS and their programmatic priorities. We all agree that it is important to consider expanding this project to additional locations - including 4th St. as we identify additional resources for our next fiscal year beginning in July 2025.

Sign revamp/rehabilitation: We are working to fund and launch a second round of neon/historic sign restorations with property owners in June or July (funding dependent). Property owners of historic signs on both Central and 4th St will be eligible for this second round.

4th St & Central Ave: As part of our major creative engagement project along Central Ave., we will have a special installation and augmented reality stop at the corner of 4th & Central to mark this important intersection and highlight the important role of 4th St as the original Route 66 through our city.

Route 66 Update: Each quarter we post a written update about all of the efforts across the City related to the Centennial. Here is the link: Albuquerque Route 66 Centennial Celebration — City of Albuquerque
CONTACT. The 311 Community Contact Center is a centralized call center for the City of Albuquerque. The 311 service is a single telephone number for all non-emergency City of Albuquerque inquiries and services.
I'm happy to address any additional questions that you have!

I want to assure you that we are still considering mural programs for 4th street that align with the Rte. 66 Centennial celebrations.  This first round of funding is in partnership with APS who requested, due to distance and from their schools, that we focus on the Central corridor.  In May, the MRA will announce a new mural grant opportunity available for properties in Metropolitan Redevelopment Areas. I will talk to our staff about including the North 4th street corridor for this competitive grant program.

Thank you,
