Public Input Requested for New Mexico COVID Memorial Public Art Designs

Dec. 8, 2025

Bernalillo County, N.M. – Bernalillo County has selected the semifinalists for the next phase of the New Mexico COVID Memorial Public Art Project, and is asking the public to share thoughts on the artists’ designs. Public comment will be open Dec. 8 through Dec. 19.

Those who are interested can view all proposed designs online and submit comments through this webpage.

The proposals will also be displayed in person in the lobby of Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square, 415 Silver Ave. SW, during regular business hours. Visitors may scan a posted QR code to submit comments after viewing the maquettes on-site.

Public input will help determine which artists advance to create the six

final panels for the memorial’s “pilgrimage path.” Each panel will feature a distinct perforated metal design, casting shifting light and shadow along the walkway. The memorial will be located at the Mesa Del Sol Sports Complex, 5601 University Blvd. SE in Albuquerque.

More than 70 artists from across the Southwest submitted concepts for the memorial. Thirteen semi-finalists have been selected for public review, and six will be chosen as finalists in early 2026.

The New Mexico COVID Memorial, scheduled for completion in 2026, will serve as a place of remembrance and reflection, honoring the lives lost and the collective experience of New Mexicans throughout the pandemic.
