I just received this email from Mary Felton, and think that it's wise
to share. I did not read the fine print for the contest, and perhaps
the devil is in the details.
Dear Julie,
Thanks for the contest posting, I have had an idea for a wine label
for a long time. I was wondering if you were fully aware of the rules
however. The winner must pay taxes on the value of the prize which
they list as $5000. I don't really know how much that would be, I know
when I do my taxes every year I have to list my winnings on a special
line on the form but it just gets figured into the entire earned
income total so I don't know if it gets taxed a different amount. I
think the artists should be reasonably prepared to pay $1500 in taxes
I would think. Also, they will own this art. Every aspect of it,
copyright included. That's a real biggie in my book. I think that
means you would have to ask permission to even have it in your
portfolio. Fine print! I think if you really want the prize this would
be worth it, but these are big issues that aren't made all that clear.
It might be really kickass wine and well worth it. I think you should
pass this along, I don't know how to email the group or I'd do it
myself.
Thanks!
Mary Felton
