I'm a student artist and am looking for a recommendation of
inexpensive but quality oil paints. There are so many brands out
there, and I'm looking to upgrade from the Winsor Newton student line.

HI Julie
Good question..as with any endeavor, the better the tools, the easier
the job, and painting is no exception. Better quality paint has more
pigment in it and therefore gives you a wider range of colors you can
mix. Unfortunately there aren't really any "inexpensive" professional
grade paints, though I have found the Utrecht brand paints to be very
good.
One thing you can do is buy bigger tubes of the colors you know you
use alot of like Ultramarine blue, white, viridian....that definitely
saves money.
The other thing you can do is look at ebay for lots of paint. I
usually buy Winsor Newton paints this way. I avoid the 150 tube lots
as they tend to have wierd colors like renaissance gold and fleshtone
that you will never use. Better to find a lot of 8 paints or so of the
colors you use most. You will probably end up paying half of what you
would pay retail.
Or looks for sales. Hope this helps. Anyone else have good tips on the
subject?

Hey Julie! I also like the Utrecht brand of paint which tend to be
less expensive to begin with, and watch for their sales. I find their
colors to my liking, although more limited than some brands, but for
the basics they're great. I absolutely agree with Sue, and believe
you have to buy good quality materials. I would avoid student brands
and 'hues' because of that. Good luck! Also, the North River Art
Society is having a sort of Artist's Yard Sale in Sept. I believe, and
you just never know, you could find some paint someone no longer
uses! Take care,

Julie, I guess everyone has their favorite. I really like painting
with "Lucas" the consistency is nice and buttery and is pretty much
the same for all colors. Also the pigment never seems to separate from
the oil. It comes from Germany and is a bit pricy so I wait till it
goes on sale at ASW (http://www.aswexpress.com/) Otherwise I stick
with Winsor Newton. Its funny how you can get used to certain brands
for certain colors though. –Steve

Pearl Arts in Cambridge also has great sales and student discounts if
you are in town...and there is a whole list of online art supply
stores at the bottom of the
"art resources links" in the links section of the NRAS homepage. Good
luck.
