North Raleigh Rainmakers,
In my experience, I’ve seen two ways to motivate people. One is with a carrot or reward for the accomplishment. The other is with a stick. This punitive means of motivation does not work in my opinion and usually leads to resentment or departure from the organization. Usually, though, there is an underlying reason for the repeated problem or situation.
The problem for me is that I am not receiving my money’s worth in value for what I am paying for with Art’s training. Because I have per-paid, August will be my last session that I pay for. I will not be attending.
Nowhere in any BNI literature or rules does it state that a group can dictate a different set of rules than what is in the BNI code of conduct. There is no, “you have to pay for training”, and there definitely is no, “you’ll receive a 10% penalty per week” for non-payment of that training. What are we, the mob? Guido gonna put the screws to you at 10% per week?
Me personally, I am not a big “insight” person. Insight is like a sparkler, great while it’s burning, but no long lasting effects. Art’s insight is not worth $600 per year to me. Because of the strong arm tactics demonstrated by the leadership regarding participation, I will be seeking a different group after the next meeting. Sometimes the stick doesn’t have the effect you desire.
Make today a success!

While it is not my intention to respond directly to Dave Kellerman’s email, it does create the opportunity to speak to a number of the things that he touches on. My comments are those of the founder of this chapter, the President of the chapter, but most importantly as a member of this chapter that is dependent on every other member of this chapter. This is lengthy, and I asked that you take the time to read it, just as I have taken the time requested of me by any member of the chapter.
First, let me say, there is no attempt on the part of anyone on the leadership or the consultant working with our chapter (Art Radtke) to motivate anyone. Rightly or wrongly, the assumption is that people joining the chapter and agreeing to the BNI code of conduct and chapter requirements are already high motivated. What you have experienced is various members of the leadership team making efforts to execute a program based on commitments that some members of the chapter are not keeping.
The adherence to the commitment of paying for the use of consultant by every member is critical because if one or more members do not pay, it jeopardizes the availability of the consultant services for every member.
When each of us submitted an application to join this chapter, we were advised of this and other requirements unique to this chapter. Everyone of us that is a member of this chapter agreed to those requirements. If you had not agreed, you would have withdrawn your application or you would have been declined membership by the Membership Committee.
This is only one of approximately 40 BNI chapters in the Triangle Area. Individuals are free to select the chapter that fits their schedules, needs etc best and I encourage them to do so. We will have members come and go. Over time, the “right” members for this chapter will stay, that may or may not include all of us and it may or may not include all of our friends and associates. What it will include is motivated individuals that keep their commitments and communicate directly when they are unable to keep their commitments.
Working with the Chapter
The work of the chapter is done at the monthly Leadership Team Meeting. The agenda of the weekly BNI meeting does not allot time for chapter business.
All members of the chapter are invited and encouraged to attend the monthly Leadership Team Meeting. You can attend in person (which is preferred, or you can email your question or concern to a Leadership Team Member prior to the meeting.)
To help clarify the purpose of the meeting I am changing the name to the Chapter Business Meeting so there is no misunderstanding that all members and not just the Leadership Team can attend. All members of the chapter are invited and encouraged to attend. The Chapter Business Meeting is scheduled for the 2nd Tuesday of each month 3:00 PM -4:00 PM. The next meeting is on August 13, 2013.
Why this Chapter was created
I started this chapter with the vision of its members being able to generate the vast majority of their business through the marketing machine of their BNI chapter. The idea is to start with the best people I knew for this (I hand picked and invited 17 people to join me in starting this chapter), seek the best continuous coaching available and execute as closely to the time tested and proven BNI strategies/principles as possible. That is extreme compared to what happens in most referral groups (BNI chapters included) everywhere. And what happens on any championship endeavors is extreme compared to the average or the norm.
I selected Art Radtke as the consultant because of his extensive BNI experience, and success consulting small business owners and sales professionals on the growth of their businesses. Art is historically one of BNI’s most successful franchise owners, has opened more BNI chapters in a single year than any BNI franchise owner and is one of the founders of the Referral Institute. While Art is unconventional, the results he produces with his clients is extraordinary. (By the way, 17 guests in a chapter with 20 members at a regular Chapter meeting is an example of that. While anybody could have done it, we didn't do it until we had the Professional Development Day session and the subsequent follow up calls from Art.) I wonder where our chapter would be if we had done as good a job on the commitments we made during the previous Professional Development Day sessions. Just as the execution of our commitments to invite people to build the Home Power Team resulted in 17 visitors on Friday, our willingness to take on and execute larger commitments will produce even larger results for our chapter and our members.
This chapter was never intended to be the average or the norm and I am sure those intentions will be met.
I will also share with you that this effort is not being done in isolation. I advised and consulted with Steve Hand, Executive Director of this Area when I decided to start this chapter. He attended the first organizational meeting and reviewed the chapter requirements prior them being shared with any potential member. In addition to guiding our chapter through launch to our official Kick-off, you may have also observed Steve Hand attends each of our Professional Development Day sessions. That is to ensure that he is personally aware of the consulting/training the chapter is receiving.
In the Spirit of Full Disclosure
For those of you who may wonder; I have made efforts to be transparent about my relationship with Art Radtke, but in case there is any questions, let me provide the following information.
I meet Art Radtke in 2003 when I was a member of a Triangle BNI chapter and Asst. Area Director. Art Radtke was the Executive Director of the Triangle Area at that time. In 2004 Art and I entered into a business arrangement together with the creating of Team Nimbus. In 2005, I also was contracted by are to serve as the BNI Area Director in the Triangle Area for one year. As most can tell, Art and I enjoy a close business and personal relationship. In fact I consider myself personally and professionally fortunate to have met and know Art as well as I have come to know him.
That said, that isn't why he was selected as the consultant for our chapter, his credentials and track record in the area he provides us consultation/training stands up against any standard.
Working with the Consultant
You should address any questions you have about the consultant’s (Art Radtke) material/subjects, directly with him. That can be done during the Professional Development Day sessions, or you can call or email him. ((757) 560-4640, a...@informedentreperneur.com)
In addition to the monthly Professional Development Day session, Art schedules and conduct a monthly check in conference call for our chapter and calls individual members of the chapter to offer assistance. If you want or need something in addition or something other than you are getting at the Professional Development Day, take advantage of these opportunities to provide the feedback to the consultant.
This is a New Chapter
Starting a new chapter is not easy. We have and will have bumps and fits and starts as we go. We will add and lose members along the way. The success of this will depend on each of us as members participating consistent with the commitments we make, communicating when we are unable to do so.
When we are no longer willing to keep a commitment, I ask that you do one of two things.
1.) Address it at Chapter Business Meeting - it will be discussed and brought to some conclusion.
2.) Withdraw your membership from the chapter.
As I stated earlier there are approximately 40 BNI chapters in the Triangle Area. This chapter will not be a match for every potential BNI member.
Each of us have committed to adhere the BNI code of conduct and chapter requirements. If you have not met those commitments, my request is that you do so immediately so that chapter members don’t have to spend additional time and effort attempting to get you to do what you said you would do when you were accepted as a member of this chapter.
