Well, this trip to Cedar Beach is one for the history books.  So many fascinated things.
Hank and I were looking at the OSPREY parking lot nest, one bird was in the nest and the mate came along and shat in me.....my hair, jacket and tripod.... In all the years I've been birding, only two birds shat on me.  A gull, while swimming and this episode.  I consider myself lucky!  We didn't a lot of species but interesting sights.  I've seen LAUGHING GULLS there but small groups, three four birds.  This time I was floored!  At least 50-60 birds on a sandbar.  What was so interesting is that the various plumages, full adults with black heads, first year birds, second year birds and non-breeding birds. There were at least 8 PIPING PLOVERS! We found three of the nest scrapes.  No chicks yet.  We saw two LEAST TERNS nest scrapes and chicks!  I've never seen chicks that small!  Too cute!! One couple had a nest outside the symbolic fencing. I'm not sure who looks after the fencing.  Suffolk County? Group for the East End?  And it's BRRR nip outside!  It's mid-June and I wore my red vest, a jacket, tee shirt and a long sleeved shirt and heavy pants!  What a World....What a World.

Thanks Jody. The terns and plovers at Cedar Beach have a varied record for success. Some years when people let their dogs run, the nests are decimated. It seems pretty early for tern chicks. I do hope they make it to fledging.

When I used to monitor nests on the beach in Mattituck I was shat upon several times — each time it was the least terns. One time right on my binoculars.

I would think laughing gulls would be on nests right now. I hope a nesting area was not disturbed. Usually those flocks show up in the fall.
