I would like to fit a remote control to a boat but don't know where to start. Can anyone give me advice on what I need and also how to do it?

HimPeter,

This is a very open question. I would say the first thing to do is to work out what are the essential requirements, and what are the stretch goals. Perhaps tell us a bit more about the boat and what kind of things you want to make remote.

All the best,

  Alistair

The boat is  4ft long battleship and was built by my late father in law who never saw it sail. Now my wife has said she would like to see it sailing on the lake.

Does the model have a motor. if so what type. steam, electric, clock work.l etc

I'm guessing at the very least it going to need a mechical throttle controller or a an electric speed controller plus a rudder control.

so a relatively simple RC setup.

however we'd need to know more about what the modle currently has and if it contains any kind of propulsion.

It does not have anything inside yet as I don't know what I need.

does have a working propeller shaft and propeller you could attach a motor to and does it have linkages to a rudder

Hi Peter,

I half suspect the best option for you is to look at joining a model boat club and learning from other members. There are quite a few around. We have members who can probably answer direct questions relating to the physical build and the electronics, but I don’t think anyone here has a check lists for you to follow.

Also do come and visit on one of our Welcome Wednesdays. You can get an idea of what we are about and perhaps get a few useful tips from others.

All the best,

  Alistair
