I have been trying to create a tweaked perma-proto board using kicad. There's examples of the Gerber files but nobody has shared the PCB or schematic files. Has anyone used kicad and would know how to do this? I've tried in PCB mode but I get a lot of errors.

The best bet is to come along on a Wednesday, there will be on average at least 2-3 people who could help you with KiCad related things.

If it helps in the mean time, the usual workflow for KiCad is to generate a schematic, assign footprints then layout your PCB.
I *think* you can manually lay out a PCB without a schematic, but this isn't really how it is designed to be used, so you might make some progress trying to follow the usual workflow.

Best,
Dan

Yes I did wonder if I was trying to be too clever.

Agree with Dan.

If you come along on an evening, someone may be able to give you some pointers if that's useful.

If you start on the PCB designer bit and start throwing footprints on, it won't want to let you connect then together because it doesn't know if they should be.

There is one option if you're trying to make something like veroboard, which is to create it as a footprint in the footprint editor, then place that on the PCB.

Cheers

David
