A quick question...

KCad, Autodesk Eagle, or other? What am I best using?

Yes I have asked this before, but it must have been 8 years ago, and I can't even remember what the outcome was.

All the best,

  Alistair

I find Kicad meets all my needs.

I started out using Eagle but I didn't see anything worth paying for.

I second KiCad.

- It is feature complete, i.e. you could lay out the same board in KiCad as you could in Altium or Eagle.
- It is FLOSS.
- It is generally well managed and resourced, as such will likely not go away any time soon and has seen noticeable improvement since I started using it.

Library/custom part management is still a bit of an arse compared to other packages, but there are a lot of libraries available for most common parts so unless you are using something obscure you will probably have limited exposure to this anyway.

Third kicad. Prefer to eagle these days.

Well that is clear. Thank you all.

I was being drawn to KiCad because it was open. I have full Eagle access through work but that can vanish. I also forgot about the RS Designspark offering, but that requires a free account that can vanish, so I am not keen.

All the best,

  Alistair

Fritzing is also an option, for a narrow use case.

I occasionally use an old version of Fritzing for quick diagrams, but it is now a pay for thing. :-(

All the best,

  Alistair
