i am an ex army aircraft technician and after leaving the service worked for airbus, fokker, dan air. air equss, gill air, and little wings at newcastle airport.  i have extensive experience working with both piston and gas turbine engines!   i am familiar with sheet metalwork, hydraulics, and pneumatics
i wonder if i can join your community in order to pass on any knowledge that my ageing  brain still has available

Hi Rich.

im not a member of the makerspace (which is what this group is mainly targeted at) but i have visited the space, and i would strongly encourage you to visit on a wednesday afternoon (the regular open night) to see the place and meet some of the people

i want to make it very clear. that you should visit the makerspace, as its a welcoming group. and you may find it appealing on the grounds of picking up new hobbies,
however,
i have visited and was very welcome, but the main focus of the members present at the time was in electronics

from what you describe, and experience from my visit, i suspect you will find your expertise is not going to be of interest to the majority of members of the makerspace.

I am a member of the Washington restoration club. the club is mainly dedicated to car and motorbike restoration however it also has fairly close ties to NELSAM , which seems like more related to your expertise.

you may also find likeminded people within the Northeast bus preservation trust who will be likely to welcome you and value your expertise. (im not a member, im simply aware of its existence)

I am not aware of other groups that may be of interest, but i would suspect if you go to north shields/silverlink stevenson railway and talk to the folk there, they may know of other comunities that may be of interest

Hi both,

Please be aware that we do not want any particular interest (e.g. Electronics) to gain any particular traction/gravitation; what we do want is for our community to be as diverse as possible.

(Though there appears to be a lot of electronics going on at the moment)

E.g., we may not have any facilities to accommodate pottery making, but if anyone had an interest, then we'd be fine with that.  A historical example I can use is Materials Science/sewing. It was nonexistent until a member came along and did their projects on the regular, and now we have hardware (sewing/knitting machines) and consumables (sheets of material etc).

We do have a small metal lathe, modified (CNC) 'Rongfu' mill, floor standing drill press, floor standing bandsaw, floor standing belt sander and a Work Bee CNC router, along with other metal and woodworking handheld/benchtop tools.  All these are located in our basement.

We're definitely not of the Motorbike/Car/Bus/Train restoration scale of machine work, though :)

Hope this helps.
- JD

I'll second that.  We're all about Making/ modifying/fixing

whatever the materials and methods needed to accomplish it.
