Hello,
I'm very tempted to join your group, though my only transport is a motorcycle. before I come along on a Wednesday, I was wondering if there is anywhere secure and out of the way I could park my bike?

Also, I know I'd need training to use it but is the CNC machine capable of cutting 3mm steel sheet?
thanks!

Hi Melissa,

Great to hear you're thinking of joining us!

Unfortunately the CNC can't cut 3mm steel, really just wood (and alu at a pinch)

There is a car park round the back of the building and I'm sure nobody would object to you parking a motorcycle there while visiting the space.

Regards

David

Hi Melissa,

If you have a chain there are a pare of racks in the yard out the back. Other motorcyclists from the building use it so I can only presume it is secure.

As for the CNC, I fear 3mm steel is pushing it. If memory serves me correctly it is not the speed of our router but the low torque that will be the problem. I am not saying it is not possible, but more research will be needed. Anyone any thoughts?

All the best,

  Alistair

Hello,

Thank you both for your replies on this, I'm glad to hear there is somewhere to lock the bike!
As for the CNC, thats entirely fair, I'm currently trying to think of how best to make something, though part of this item is a metal ring shaped structure about 50mm dia, approx 3mm thick. I'll keep having a think and hopefully will come up with something!

Kind regards,
Melissa

If it is only 50mm then getting it manufactured via an online service should not be overly expensive, but if the design is intricate then routing may not be the best option. In fact that is the kind of size a water jet may be the best option. There is one at the glass centre in Sunderland, although it is only available for commercial work one day every other week.

All the best,

  Alistair

Apologies, I meant 500mm, I missed the zero! I've looked at websites like xometry.com for an idea of how expensive it would be for them to make it based on a .stl file and the quotes were rather eye watering.
the material could also be aluminium, if steel is unworkable for myself

Ha, right, yes, 500mm is going to be rather more. I am now intrigued as to what it is.

It might still be worth giving Sunderland Uni a call about the water jet cutter. I probably still have some contact details if you get stuck.

All the best,

  Alistair

I'll have a think, and sadly its nothing terribly too interesting. I'm wanting to fix up some old toys but parts are getting scarcer. I was also wanting to recreate these toys but with differing dimensions and that type of thing

Kind regards,

The cheap alternative to a CNC water jet would be using the CNC router to make templates to be followed by a handheld plasma cutter.
You'd end up with more edge cleaning to do, but spend much less time and effort doing the manual cut compared to a saw.
We do not, however, have a plasma cutter, nor do we have a suitable indoor place to use one.

Best,
Dan
