The Bodgers' association could be helpful in this regard (that's the
Northeast section of the Pole-Lathe Turners and Green Woodworkers
Association for the unfamiliar;
bodgers.org.uk). There are
occasional smithing meets over a portable forge during the monthly
sessions. I think it's worth asking if there are smithing spaces at
Kirkley Hall (Northumberland College), which may have been used for
bodging sessions on occasion. A good point of contact may be Maurice
Pyle, who did run bodgers courses there, and who runs/ran the
Woodsmith Experience shop and toolmaking operation from Whitley Bay:
woodsmith.co.uk. There will be other artisan groups around with
blacksmiths among them - so I'd be asking at arts colleges, looking
for regional re-enactment groups, rural skills training providers,
those sorts of things.

been looked at, but sadly it is not viable in our
current location. In fact
any hot working became complicated ...more

Hi Alistair,
Ah that's a shame! No problem, hot working seems to
be a problem in a lot
of commercial lets now. I'll let you know if I
figure anything out and you
can share it.
