Actually that is £12 + VAT + shipping. If someone wants to share
postage then I am interested in adding one to your order.

Me too, I'd like anything up to 5, if anyone is willing to include them
in their order.

I'm happy to split shipping either by number of users or number of GPS
modules ordered...

Warning: I'd put an order in myself, but their site asks for personal
details over a non-encrypted link, and even at that saving I just can't
do it!

I tried sticking https:// on the front - no joy. Any other ideas?

Thats what I was thinking. Vat 20% +
Shipping is flat rate of £5 for 1 or  as many as required.

Their other project is interesting. Hardward and service subscription to use iridium network for sms...

I've been a little cheeky - I decided to give them a call to ask if
there was a way to take an order without going through the website -
they're going to check and call back.

If they say yes, I'll order the following:

Brian: 1
Alistair: 1
Dainius: 1
Colin: 1
Me: 5 (I'll reduce to 1 if there's not enough to go around -
assuming there's any left by the time they come back...).

If anyone wants to order before they get back, please do. Anyone else
interested?

As if I wasn't feeling cheeky enough already - I found my inbound VoIP
calls have a problem, so I had to call back and give him an updated number.

Apparently they're going to add a certificate to the domain.

P.S. I forgot to say thanks to Brian for posting - great find!

That Ebay module looks interesting but it does need an external antenna, which if you don't have and had to buy extra will bump up overall proce.

I might get one of these to play with too (i have a good quality external antenna)

Their website has now got https on it.

I've just ordered 13, I have provisionally organised them in my head as:

Brian: 2
Alistair: 1
Dainius: 1
Colin: 1
Glen: 1
Chris: 2
Me: 5 (I can take up slack if people have changed their mind).

Total: 13.

I can see Mick's post is causing some wavering - with good reason.
I'm sticking with the (slightly) easier option for now, but may want to
pick people brains later. If people change their mind I'm sure I can
find buyers.

It looks to be delivered next week, I'll bring them in when they
arrive. For those who want them it'll be ~15 inc VAT CoD. I requested
tracked shipping (just because of the size of the order), but they've
charged me normal. I've sent an email to check, so I'll confirm the
exact price when I know how they're shipped.

I received the GPS modules :)

The total price including shipping and VAT is 14.86 (46p shipping!)

I'm happy to accept the correct change, though if people prefer to round
up, I'll donate any excess to Makerspace.

I'll bring them in today.

Does anyone remember if these are 3V3 or 5V? I can't find any of the details on it.

Cheers,
  Chris

I think they are 3v3... I'll have a quick check.

I finally got round to looking for the details I found in the past.

In case anyone wants it, the datasheet for the chip seems to be available from:
http://www.roundsolutions.com/techdocs/aarlogic/AarLogic-GPS3T-documentation.pdf

NMEA details are given in a related chip data sheet:
http://www.roundsolutions.com/gps/AarLogic-GPS-3M.pdf

The chip is 3v3, testing indicates the socket on my board connects as
pin    101N3 pin	function
1      1,9,10 GND
2      8 VCC
3      7 Enable (must drive hi to make it work)
4      4 RX
5      3 TX

If anyone knows any differently, please let me know.

I've just got round to using my first one.  I've got it spewing the NMEA formatted data out, I think it indicates it can see twelve satellites, but it isn't getting a lock as yet.

Did anyone get one working - and if they did is there any set up required (apparently there are some optional inits to make it faster, but I don't think it's required...)

If I remember I'll put this on the wiki - another day!

Nice one Will. I was under the impression that the enable was pull low to work. don't know why...

I have managed to get one to lock onto a position in the past, but if I remember rightly, there was only 4 satellites so with 12 you should be good to go. It did take a little while to lock on. A couple of minutes at least.

I'll try and hook mine up again tonight and see what it throws out at me.

If you're setting it up in the space, you'll have an audience of at least 1!
I'm curious to see the resolution etc
First step: getting it to work

My GPS project used a different module, I think, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same chip underneath.

I remember having to do a bit of fiddling to get it working nicely, but can't remember any of the details.  I'll bring the code in tomorrow if that'll help anyone.  The fiddling might have been because I wanted time and date as well as location.  I don't remember.

I do remember that it wouldn't get a lock in the space.  I had to take it outside.  It'll start reporting when it can see any satellites at all, but needs a long look at a decent number of them to get a lock.  That can take minutes if it doesn't have a good view of the sky.

It can supposedly lock faster if the last use was recent enough and it has a battery to retain the data, but I never got that to work.

It's this: http://www.adafruit.com/product/746, which is a breakout board for a GlobalTop FGPMM0PA6H (or something similar), which is a module using who knows what chip(s).

I've had a look at the code, and there's no real magic.  Initialise the serial port and wait for data.  It'll give location status when it can.  The fiddling I remembered was having to wait until the module has initialised itself before sending the "and can I have the time and date as well please?" command.
