The German company Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE, until 2022 called Gazprom Germania) and the Argentinian firm Southern Energy have signed an LNG purchase agreement today. They laugh in our faces – once more: the agreement should help Europe increase its energy security and diversify its LNG sources... but we’re talking about 2 mtpa (2,7 bcm per year), which is peanuts. And anyway, we don’t need more gas since there is already a global surplus.
Why is this so relevant?
- It is the first LNG contract with Argentina. Until now, no one had dared to buy LNG from there.
- It enables the construction of an LNG export terminal in a UNESCO World Heritage Site (the Gulf of San Matías), the construction of a gas pipeline almost 500 km long (from Vaca Muerta) and fracking gas extraction at the sixth largest carbon bomb in the world!
- More fracking gas will be imported to Germany/Europe.
- More livelihoods (especially those of indigenous communities) and nature will be destroyed.
- A new fossil lock-in will be created. In 2026.

State-owned company SEFE fuels Argentine fracking boom with new contract: German Environmental Action (DUH) calls for moratorium on new LNG supply contracts
Berlin, 4 March 2026: DUH has sharply criticised the new LNG supply contract between Germany and Argentina that was announced today. The German state-owned company Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) has confirmed a long-term contract with the Argentine consortium Southern Energy for two million tonnes of liquefied natural gas imports per year. The contract is expected to utilise more than 30 per cent of the capacity of the first floating LNG export terminal, which is scheduled to go into operation in 2027 in the ecologically valuable Gulf of San Matías. Initially, the LNG will come from offshore production in Tierra del Fuego; from winter 2028, fracking gas from the Vaca Muerta region will also be supplied to Germany. This is the first LNG supply contract secured by the highly controversial ‘Argentina LNG’ project.
Sascha Müller-Kraenner, Federal Managing Director of DUH: "With this agreement, the state-owned company SEFE is supporting the Argentine government's controversial fossil fuel expansion plans. Up to six regasification ships and two new pipelines are to be built in the Gulf of San Matías, directly adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage Site – a fossil fuel industrialisation of this ecologically valuable habitat with catastrophic consequences for marine fauna. Fracking in Vaca Muerta, for which indigenous communities are being displaced and robbed of their agricultural livelihoods, is also to be massively expanded in order to supply Germany with gas that we do not even need. In view of foreseeable overcapacities, the deal threatens to become an expensive risk for consumers. We call on the German government to impose a moratorium on all new LNG contracts in order to thoroughly examine the effects of LNG over-procurement on energy prices and climate and environmental protection. In view of current global political developments, the German government must focus on the energy transition and sustainable non-fossil fuel security of supply."

Staatskonzern SEFE befeuert mit neuem Vertrag argentinischen Fracking-Boom: Deutsche Umwelthilfe fordert Moratorium für neue LNG-LieferverträgeBerlin, 4.3.2026: Die Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) kritisiert den heute bekannt gewordenen neuen LNG-Liefervertrag zwischen Deutschland und Argentinien scharf. Der deutsche Staatskonzern Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) hat einen langfristigen Vertrag mit dem argentinischen Konsortium Southern Energy über jährlich zwei Millionen Tonnen Flüssigerdgas-Importe bestätigt. Der Vertrag soll das erste schwimmende LNG-Exportterminal, das ab 2027 im ökologisch wertvollen Golf von San Matías in Betrieb gehen soll, zu mehr als 30 Prozent auslasten. Zunächst soll das LNG aus der Offshore-Förderung in Feuerland stammen; ab Winter 2028 soll zusätzlich Fracking-Gas aus der Vaca-Muerta-Region nach Deutschland geliefert werden. Es handelt sich um den ersten LNG-Liefervertrag, den sich das hoch umstrittene „Argentina LNG“-Projekt sichern konnte.

„Mit diesem Vertrag stützt der Staatskonzern SEFE die umstrittenen fossilen Ausbaupläne der argentinischen Regierung. Bis zu sechs Regasifizierungsschiffe und zwei neue Pipelines sollen im Golf von San Matías unmittelbar am UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe errichtet werden – eine fossile Industrialisierung dieses ökologisch wertvollen Lebensraums mit katastrophalen Auswirkungen für die Meeresfauna. Auch das Fracking in Vaca Muerta, für das indigene Gemeinschaften verdrängt und ihrer landwirtschaftlichen Lebensgrundlage beraubt werden, soll massiv ausgeweitet werden, um Deutschland mit Gas zu beliefern, das wir gar nicht brauchen. Der Deal droht angesichts absehbarer Überkapazitäten zu einem teuren Risiko für Verbraucherinnen und Verbraucher zu werden. Wir fordern von der Bundesregierung ein Moratorium auf alle neuen LNG-Verträge, um die Auswirkungen der LNG-Überbeschaffung auf Energiepreise sowie Klima- und Umweltschutz eingehend zu prüfen. Die Bundesregierung muss sich angesichts der aktuellen weltpolitischen Entwicklungen auf die Energiewende und eine nachhaltige nicht-fossile Versorgungssicherheit konzentrieren.“
