There is a lot wrong with the way lower Montgomery County and Upper Northwest DC coach girls softball. The issues are too numerous to go into, and the parent coaches, while they are doing the best they can, are unlikely to change.
I’d like to offer some free clinics and some scrimmages this summer at Norwood Park, in Chevy Chase. I am a retired federal employee, and I have plenty of time on my hands. I coached my daughter’s travel team, and while we didn’t win all of our games – although we won our share – we had the most fun! My daughter will be there as well. At least one other adult must be present at all practices and scrimmages.
I’d like to offer my services over the summer, beginning after July 4, to any girls who are interested – from age 8-13 and from beginner to advanced -- with an emphasis on pitching (we'll bring in a former U. of Florida varsity pitcher a couple of times) throwing (full extension), fielding (catching with your hands up, not spread) and hitting (weight shift and hip rotation), We'll use sponge softballs, whiffle softballs, and "softie" training softballs (close to the real thing, but slightly softer), and we will play scrimmages with coach pitch, as necessary, because you can't replicate a batted ball, No bases on balls or stolen bases allowed. We'll end the summer by taking the girls to a local Class C travel tournament so they can see the future.
That way, when fall arrives, the girls have a good foundation and maybe some of what they learn will rub off on the coaches and parents!
