If anyone knows these young men, please let them know that ringing doorbells and running is not really that funny, and please tell them to wear a mask.  At the minimum, it will be harder to identify them if they did.  ;)

Thank you,

David

Awww don’t be so fussy. They are just little kids trying to have fun. There is not much for these kids to do to entertain themselves after 11 months of being locked up. Looks like “ring ding ditch” is making a comeback ;)
Or maybe they honestly went to the wrong house and panicked?

Also- from a different neighborhood listserv, it’s is apparently illegal to take and post pictures of minors without parents permission. Just passing it on. I didn’t know that.

Yes, illegal to post minors pictures without parental permission.  However, if not harmless fun, the children and parents show know they could get into trouble.  Just saying.....

Jen,

Do you have a reference to the law you are referencing?  I am not a lawyer and could have missed it, but I did a search and what I saw was that it is generally legal to post pictures of people taken in public without their consent... age is not a consideration.  I looked at federal, Maryland, and Montgomery County websites.  Please correct me if I missed it.

One kid (not pictured) who clearly did not like this game was sitting by himself on the curb across the street, and when I came outside he pointed to his friends hiding behind a neighbor's car two houses up the street.  This was intentional, not a mistake.

And call me names if you want, but it is difficult for some people to get up to answer the doorbell. I'd rather this not happen to my elderly neighbors.  And I want to see groups of kids from different households wearing masks.

Thank you,

David

David- I am not a lawyer either but on a different neighborhood listserv something similar happened and it turns out it is illegal to post pictures of minors without parental permission.
Makes sense I guess.  We have to sign a form every year at my kids school giving them permission for any pictures of them that they may be used.
I am not name calling. I am saying it lightheartedly. These kids have been robbed of everything in life for almost a year now. Adults need to cut them a little bit of a break is all.

Jen,

I am not sure what you mean by "cut them a break".  If any adult or child comes on to my property to play a prank on me, it is well within my rights to tell them i don't think it is funny.  And I told them that, and told them I was going to post their picture on the list serve, and that they should wear masks.  I did not say or do anything else to them.  I can and will say I don't like it on this listserv, and ask that anyone who knows them to tell them I said it's not funny and they should wear a mask.  I am not calling for their arrest or banishment, but I'd want to know what my kids were up to if I was their parent, and this is a way to get that message out.

As to legality I understand that you saw it someplace, I can't find a single law that says that and I don't think what you read was correct.  If someone wants to correct me, please do - with reference to the law(s) that are relevant.

As for giving the school system permission to use your child's image, I saw that when I was looking for laws. Assuming your child goes to MCPS, it appears the form says the school assumes you agree unless you opt out - so that implies that it is allowed unless you request they do not.  Part of MCPS policy for social media (also found online) states that employees of MCPS may not "post images of students in the classroom whose parents or guardians have not provided written consent" which seems to  contradict the form a bit, but in either case these don't apply to photos of people in public.

For your reference the form is the "Annual Notification for Directory Information and Student Privacy."  It looks like a parent can opt their child having their picture in the directory, and can opt out of being in recordings of virtual lessons.

Regards,

David

Whatever floats your boat. Just tying to give you some friendly advice. Listen, if you feel the need to publicly shame some 8 year olds then that’s your choice.
I am not mistaken it since it was a friend of mine who was involved. So if those parents want to come after you then they can.
And no my kids don’t go to MCPS.

That is great, since you were not mistaken, please provide a link, the name of the law, or ask your friends to provide it.  I really do want to know what this law is.

Thank you,

David
