Ending Corporate Personhood:
Foundations of a True Democracy for Building a New Economy
Americans proudly hold the U.S. Constitution's declaration of "We the People" as defining our nation. Yet, as the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision of 2010 opened the door for unlimited, anonymous corporate spending on our elections, the harsh reality of our democracy being usurped by corporate money-powered interests under these "rights of corporate personhood" became undeniable. This poses a serious challenge for building a New Economy upon a strong transparent democracy. How did we get here, and what can we do to create a democracy true to the principle of one person, one vote?
This year Move to Amend chapters in four California counties are working to qualify initiatives for their county ballot calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that states that corporations are not people, and money is not free speech. Similar initiatives are springing up all around the country. Learn more about this rapidly-growing movement to truly democratize our democracy with Amy Hanks of Move to Amend Sonoma County. Attendees wishing to help qualify Sonoma County's "Build Democracy, End Corporate Rule" initiative for the ballot are welcome to stay after the presentation to get petitions and training to support this effort.
