Can Help Reshape the NorCal Economy

Many of us know by now that Wall Street banks and our Fed-controlled monetary system aren’t working for most Americans. The question is: what can we do about it?

One powerful response is the rise of alternative currencies which are already complementing the use of the dollar in communities nationwide. Alternative currencies have different forms and are designed for different purposes. Bitcoin, for example, is designed to appreciate in value over time and is currently being used mainly for financial speculation.

Bay Bucks, on the other hand, are designed for a just and sustainable economy and are now being exchanged by individuals and businesses to buy and sell real products and services throughout the Bay Area. Bay Bucks democratize the creation of money by allowing users to create money as they need it, on demand. Functioning as a barter trade exchange, they are the essence of community currency: the more Bay Bucks circulate and the greater numbers of people who use them, the stronger the relationships and economic ties grow as a community.

In this first SNEP event of 2014, you will learn about different kinds of alternative currencies operating in California and around the world, how they work, and why using them is good for you and the economic diversity of your region. It’s time to redesign our money, reinvest in community and remake our economy. Come be a part of the movement.

Speaker: Dr. Chong Kee Tan received his PhD at Stanford University, with research focused on Chinese economic reform. He is co-founder of Bay Bucks, a complementary currency for the Bay Area.
