Bulbs, Bags, and Boldly Beyond: A Climate Action Gathering to energize people from across the Berkshires to address the urgency for an energy independent County
On Saturday, May 9, from 9:00am to 11:30am, at the Lenox Town Hall, individuals, citizen groups, town committees, and public officials are invited to meet to speak about energy and climate action issues. All who are committed to addressing climate change and promoting energy self-reliance are invited to attend.
Many groups and organizations around the Berkshires are already doing good work. This meeting will honor that work, provide a way to share resources, experiences, and challenges of local initiatives. Information has been gathered about existing campaigns, and these materials will be shared, so that initiatives like energy efficient lighting, anti-idling, renewable energy implementation, low carbon diets, adopting policies such as green building and renewable energy bylaws, and more might be adapted by other towns.
What makes this gathering unique?
While each town has its issues and pet projects – and that is great – the organizers are daring to imagine a County-wide effort. Something radical. Something that will unify our citizens from the borders of Vermont to the borders of Connecticut. Is there an effort that we can all get behind and really make happen? What aspect of the immense challenges facing us at this point in history makes sense for us to tackle?
From Nancy Nylen, CET’s Climate Action Circuit Rider: “I hear again and again that people want to work at the local level, but they also want to be part of a larger goal and vision for the Berkshires. That vision is one of the Berkshires as a place where we could supply a significant portion of our energy while preserving the beauty and quality of life that we all value so strongly.”
Is it taking on the issue of plastic bags – absolutely, across the County – by 2011?
Is it the end of the light bulb as we know it throughout our County – by 2011?
Or can we go to a BOLDLY BEYOND topic that we can tackle and succeed in by working together? Issues around going beyond fossil fuels, or radically new modes of transportation, or …..???
This meeting is the beginning of a conversation, one that will lead to action. Bring your passion for change and your commitment to use the challenges on our plate to rise to new heights. Let the dialogue begin!
The organizing group for the event includes Nancy Nylen and Laura Dubester of the Center for Ecological Technology (CET), Wendy Penner of the Williamstown COOL Committee, and Susan Olshuff and Greg Federspiel of the Lenox Environmental Committee.
