The Final Chapter was not the final chapter after all. 4 years later, Welcome to Raccoon City was released in November 2021 starring Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runner) as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (Game of Thrones) as Jill Valentine and Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker. The seventh film diverged from the storyline of the previous six as it follows the games more closely. While Welcome to Raccoon City closely followed the events of the first two Resident Evil games, while also putting their own twist on the story, it seems that this new attempt to reboot the franchise didn't take off the way that fans hoped.
Paul W.S. Anderson ultimately helmed the first Resident Evil movie, which was a comeback for the director following the box-office failures of Event Horizon and Soldier. In many ways, the Resident Evil series would become a defining franchise for the filmmaker, as he either wrote or directed all six chapters, in addition to meeting his future wife Milla Jovovich during the first film. The movies remain controversial among fans, as they favor outlandish action over suspense or horror and largely ignore the stories from the games.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter may not be the final chapter in the zombie film saga after all, as the production company in charge of the series, Constantin Film, has unveiled its plans to reboot the sci-fi horror franchise.
"Creating an ongoing story that made audiences want to come back for more was a smart play," Owen says. "The increasing box office revenue (give or take) between films shows they have created a fan base that want to see the next chapter of Alice's adventure."
Picking up directly after the events of the first film, 2004's Resident Evil: Apocalypse chronicles Alice's efforts to escape a zombie-ridden Raccoon City after making it out alive from the Umbrella Corporation's underground facility, with the killing-machine protagonist banding together with fellow survivors to reach safety. After Umbrella tries and fails to quarantine the infested city, its residents as well as Alice are sealed in with the zombies, and they must hurry to find a way out before a nuclear bomb is detonated.
In Resident Evil: Extinction, Alice meets Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), a major character from the video games, and a convoy of survivors, including her ally Carlos Olivera and former Raccoon City resident L.J. Wade (Mike Epps). The film also features the appearance of notorious villain Albert Wesker (Jason O'Mara), the Chairman of Umbrella who wants to see the destruction of humanity by any means necessary. Alice and Claire fight to protect the survivors as they travel across the Mojave Desert to Alaska, where they hope to find refuge but must battle against newly created super zombies and the monster Tyrant before they can.
