From music education to performing, conducting, choir and more, the field of music brings together talented and passionate performers and scholars interested in musical development and personal enrichment.

At USD, our faculty are qualified and effective leaders who bring a wealth of experiences and insights to the classroom, stage or studio. This expertise, coupled with our small class sizes, creates a rich learning environment for our students, who learn to think creatively and work collaboratively as they strive to further their knowledge and love of music. We connect our students with real-world experiences, like internships and study abroad opportunities, that allow them to learn both inside and outside the classroom. With these skills and experiences guiding them, our students go on to lead, teach, conduct, compose, perform and shape music in our world. You'll find them behind the baton on the marching field or behind the microphone at center stage.

USD boasts two jazz ensembles where you may gain big band experience and perform in small group settings with an emphasis on improvisation. The jazz bands also host some of the top artists in the country each year. Both ensembles perform on-campus concerts each term and tour off-campus within the state and region.

The University of South Dakota Percussion Ensemble offers any student who shows the ability and desire to play percussion the opportunity to perform. The group performs in a wide range of genres: modern avant-garde, steel drum music, indoor drumline, ragtime music, pop and jazz arrangements, and many more. Through the ensemble, students are allowed the opportunity to grow as a percussionist/musician through the experience of performing exciting and challenging works written specifically for percussion instruments. The ensemble is active in the area and performs concerts throughout the region.

The USD Chamber Orchestra is an elite conductor-less strings ensemble with members chosen by audition from the Department of Music and across campus. The group has been selected as a performing ensemble for the South Dakota Music Educators Association Conference and the Iowa Music Educators Association Conference.

The USD Opera offers students the opportunity to bring music and drama to life on the stage. The multiple national award-winning program trains performers to become believable and compelling singing-actors in operatic literature from the Baroque period through the contemporary lyric theater.

Music scholarships are available to music majors, music minors and music participants. USD offers a large number of scholarships to recognize academic excellence and encourage development in a particular field. The Department of Music has scholarships specifically for students who are pursuing theatre, and we strive to recognize and reward outstanding students for their accomplishments and potential through scholarships and travel funding. All music majors must audition for entrance into the program. Auditions for music scholarships take place each year in February. Students seeking a music scholarship will use that audition process as meeting the requirement.

For the undergraduate admissions and scholarship auditions, students must prepare two selections in contrasting styles. Students can audition in more than one area (i.e., voice and flute, trumpet and violin, etc.). Select and prepare your repertoire well in advance so you have enough time to perform to the best of your abilities. In your audition, the scholarship committee is listening to and evaluating your current skills, as well as your potential to grow as a musician. It is important for us to assess whether each student we admit and award scholarships to has the potential to be successful in the music profession.

Maurice Sendak never considered the life of a child to be carefree. He was born in 1928 and raised in Brooklyn by Polish Jewish immigrants, and much of his extended family died in the Holocaust. Like many in their Yiddish-speaking community, his parents believed that children should not be shielded from the darker parts of the world.

This portrait photograph of Isabella Stewart Gardner shows her from the waist up holding a large unclasped book open in her two hands which are splayed underneath to hold the heavy volume close up in front of her. She is dressed in a dark woolen coat with just one ribbed cuff visible; underneath she wears a dark dress with a high collar. A dark leather strap decorated with two metallic buttons crosses over her body from her left shoulder and probably is attached to a purse. She also wears a small dark hat whose dotted veil is tight over her face. Mrs. Gardner is turned a quarter way to her right with her face tilted down, reading the book. Her lips are ever so slightly open and she appears to be studying the text. The bottom of the photograph is inscribed R O in an oval - photographer, Otto Rosenheim's initials.

Maurice Sendak and Isabella Stewart Gardner had more in common than one might think. Both native New Yorkers, they shared a love for music and its capacity to inspire creativity and complement the visual arts, as well as a passion for conjuring immersive environments.

This book contains the musical score for the German opera, "Tristan und Isolde." On the right hand page is the title "Tristan und Isolde" in large, bold lettering surrounded by light gray filigree. Below is the name Richard Wagner, the creator of this opera. The book contains the complete vocal score for the opera by Hans Von Bulow, as noted in German below the title. The title and the filigree surrounding it are the largest and most notably decorated. Farther down the page, the text gets simpler and the decorations around it lessen. All the text on this page is in German. On the left hand side is a list of music by different composers for piano. It looks to be a list of other musical scores sold by the publishing company.

This paper folding fan was produced by the Bayreuth Opera House in Germany in 1892, probably as a tourist souvenir. The ribs of the fan are enameled wood. The paper is discolored yellow from age. It is printed with a variety of sepia colored scenes: part of the score for the opera Parsifal, a profile photo of a man, the city of Bayreuth, architectural views of the Wagner Theater, Wahnfried house, and other local attractions. The images are linked with botanical sprigs and a central ribbon with Bayreuth written across it. The reverse side is plain paper but it has been signed and dated by twenty performers at the Bayreuth Opera House in ink and pencil.

This vertical pencil and watercolor painting titled Costume Design for Ida Rubenstein as Saint Sebastian, by Lon Bakst shows a model wearing the costume Rubenstein would wear as Saint Sebastian. The model stands facing forward, slightly turned to our right. Their head is turned to our right and seen in profile. The light-skinned face is drawn in pencil with a patch of blush on the right cheek and pink lips, and dark curly hair falling down over the back of the neck. The model is wearing an unusually shaped blue hat with greenish trim, a red fitted top with white adornment on the right sleeve, bright green tights, and a billowing blue and green cape that falls from the neck almost to the ankle. The cape covers the left side of the body. Bluish-green booties with sharp points at the toe complete the outfit. The model stands with their right hand resting on a patterned belt at the hip. In the upper corner to our right is the inscription St. Sebastien II Acte/Mme. Ida Rubinstein. In the lower corner to our right is the signature BAKST 1911.
