One of the Nordic teams today encountered someone coming down from Pan Face who self-reported to them that they had been in an avalanche coming down Pan Face. The person was not buried but lost gear and was shook up. They were traveling solo.
.
Ranger Kevin stopped by Nisqually House this evening and asked if we knew about the incident. He requested that in the future if we encounter something similar (individuals reporting they were involved in an avalanche, including near misses) that we call it in to dispatch so they can decide what follow up they want to do. Any information we can get to identify the individual(s) is helpful (phone number, name, description, etc). Ideally we should encourage them to stop and talk to a Ranger on the way out or get a phone number. The purpose is not to get them into trouble but to better understand what happened, how much information the individual had as well as knowledge of things like lost gear (so if someone finds it they don't assume burials).
