Attached are the Daily Patrol Log for Jan 18th and 19th.
Saturday Jan 18 - Avy LOW (all aspects, all elevations)
Nordic 1: Terry, Monte, Ray - Installed a pole at the base of 4th crossing per Ranger request. Checked pole at top of 4th Crossing and proceeded down Mazama Ridge to Inspiration Saddle. More visitors on the ridge than usual. Snow conditions exceeded our low expectations. Checked poles from there to Paradise via Devils Dip route. No pole issues whatsoever.
Nordic 2: Brian, Gene, Ken - traveled up Edith Creek basin to Pan Pt to McClure Rock. Extensive PSAR at base of Pan Pt. I know the text on the actual patrol log is garbled but what it intended to convey is that we didn't see any poles marking the steep gully just east of Skyline Trail and north of Alta Vista. Maybe they haven't been put out yet?
Sunday Jan 19 - Avy LOW (all aspects, all elevations)
Nordic 1: Terry, Ray - up Dead Horse (no campers!) to base of Pan Point. Hung out at the base for hours talking to approx 200 visitors. Lots of PSAR messaging wrt sketchy conditions on east side of Skyline Loop and especially risk of glissading with snowshoes on. Coaxed a group of visitors attempting a risky descent on the steep slope above Glacier Vista to climb back up and descend via Pan face. Encountered a pair of kids (10 and 15 year old) whose parents had parked them by the side of the trail while the parents went on to climb Pan Pt. The kids waited in 28 deg weather for over an hour and were very cold when we came along. When Dad finally returned we explained to him why that wasn't a good decision. Come to find out Dad didn't even know where Mom was. Go figure.
Nordic 2: Monte, Gene - Paradise to Reflection Lake. PSAR messaging wrt to the climb from there up to Faraway Rock. Basically, not a good idea in these conditions.
Nordic 3: Ken, Ryan, Bradley - skied up Edith Creek basin, hung out at base of Pan Point for quite awhile talking with visitors before heading up and then descending down the east side of Pan to Edith Creek basin again.
