Here is the other incident Suzanna, David and I were involved in. Just figure it is worth writing up.

Incident Report – Mt. Rainier National Park

Date of Incident: April 13, 2025

Submitted By: Don Shingler

Location: Narada Face Area

Incident Time: Approximately 09:30–11:00

Incident Summary:

On the morning of April 13, 2025, David, Susanna, and I (Don Shingler) departed from Narada Falls trailhead and began ascending toward the road. While approaching Narada Face from the upper road we observed a group of individuals attempting to ascend the looker’s left side of the face, primarily within the trees, attempting to boot up a steep and icy slope.

Noting the potential hazard, we paused and made contact with the lead party to assess their route and condition. The group appeared scattered and unsure on this steep terrain, prompting us to wait until the first individual successfully topped out. Once he reached the top, we offered guidance and coaching to assist others in safely navigating the climb. Several unaffiliated parties were attempting the same route.

Incident Details:

Shortly thereafter, one member of the ascending group reached the top carrying a rope. I utilized this rope to provide additional assistance by tossing it down and helping secure the next few individuals climbing up.

During this time, an individual lower on the slope lost his footing and began sliding uncontrollably down the icy face, impacting several trees during his descent. Fortunately, he came to a stop and remained conscious. I made voice contact with him to confirm his status, as did his climbing partner who was upslope.

The fallen individual reported that he was had bruised his arm but otherwise uninjured, though he had broken a ski pole during the slide. He indicated he was capable of self-evacuation and planned to descend to the road. Along with his partner.

Immediately after at approximately 10:45, I radioed Dispatch to request that an EMS unit respond to Narada to intercept and assess the patient as a precautionary measure.

Outcome:

Due to the extremely icy condition of Narada Face, our team remained above and monitored the situation from a safe location. We confirmed that EMS personnel made contact with the individual, assessed him, and released him without transport.

Following confirmation that the patient was stable and care had been transferred appropriately, David, Susanna, and I continued our original route and proceeded toward Castle.
