We had no precipitation and low temps all week - this led to a very frozen snowpack this weekend. Congratulations to Summer E. and Matt H. for their first patrol days - both of them were enthusiastic patrollers and very fun to be out with.
Saturday
We had six patrollers. The plan was to check on the poles and do PSAR. Nordic 1 were on skis and was myself, Ryan M., and Summer E. Nordic 2 consisted of Johan E., Gene K., and Monte W. on snowshoes. We planned on the two teams doing the Skyline loop between Narada and Paradise in opposite directions.
The snow was too hard for skis, so Nordic 1 ended up booting up and went up Devil's dip to Paradise, then went up Fourth Crossing and got a lap in at the back bowls. We went back down to the JVC, and met up with Nordic 2 there, who did the trail until Mazama ridge and then came down via Fourth Crossing. Lots of visitor contacts by both teams - no major incidents or SARs.
Sunday
We had nine patrollers. Nordic 1 was myself, Remo C., Matt H. on skis/splitboards. Nordic 2 was Gretchen S, Laura T., Johan E, and Gene K. Nordic 3 was Natalia M-P., Tom J.
Nordic 1 recovered a buried transceiver from the previous day's avalanche class (which we did) at Fourth Crossing, went up to Mazama Ridge, and dropped down to Edith Basin via Golden Gate. Nordic 2 and 3 roped off the water treatment center and the pool of water right by it where visitors were cold plunging the previous day (see pics, photo credit: Laura T). Nordic 3 did PSAR by the Paradise parking lot and Nordic 2 went up to the base of Pan to do PSAR there. No major incidents again.
Items for next week:
- One of the pickup truck's headlights is out
- Please check the chains in both vehicles are present and that they fit - I did not have time to do this this weekend
- The downstairs bathroom in the house needs hand soap and hand towels
Best,
- Sid
