Call for Applications
The Early Career branch of the European Society for Environmental History (ESEHNEXTGATe) is seeking new members to join its committee for a two-year term 2025–2027.
What does ESEHNEXTGate do:
Our primary mission is to support Early Career Researchers (ECRs) navigate their academic journey in the field of Environmental History (also engaging with other disciplines in the Environmental Humanities). A glimpse at our activities: we host hands-on online seminars aimed at enhancing work in a friendly and constructive manner (like the Writing Support Programme); we facilitate networking events at Environmental History conferences and also help connect ECRs in the field with more experienced scholars, who can offer guidance; we showcase the work of ECRs on media platforms and dedicated databases, and also organize events in collaboration with like-minded groups, such as Environmental History Now; and we try to represent the needs and interests of ECRs within the broader Environmental History community by contributing to the Environment and History journal through notepads. Our work is voluntary with no fees, respecting members' busy schedules. We engage with ECRs from diverse backgrounds, working on various topics, and at different career stages. For more concrete info, check the latest notepad here.
What we’re looking for:
The committee members we seek, ECRs (early career researchers – broadly defined), possess certain qualities: they should be willing to commit a portion of their time to actively think about and work towards supporting ECRs. This commitment involves practical tasks such as emailing, online meetings, social media engagement, and collaborative efforts. We seek people who are generous, possess a spirit of teamwork, are mindful of the challenges ECRs face in their academic journey, and perhaps have personal experiences or insights into these challenges. New members will help create several support & networking activities that will connect with the broader ECR community. We welcome people with diverse backgrounds, who would like to continue developing the activities mentioned above and who will bring fresh ideas to shape ESEHNEXTGATe future initiatives. Activities can take place online or in person as well as between and during conferences.
How to apply:
If you are interested in becoming a NEXTGATe committee member and believe you possess the qualities we are looking for, please reach out. Contact the NEXTGATe member Mona Bieling at biel...@hsu-hh.de with a letter (400 words maximum) containing: 1) a brief introduction to yourself, 2) your motivation for wanting to join us and 3) if you have an initiative that you would like to develop in particular as part of the team (not mandatory) and 4) a CV (4 pages maximum). The application deadline is 15th of October 2025, 4 PM (CET).
