Game 148: Skunk Works - Mission Debrief

Date/Location:

July 22, 3065 / Muphrid, Lyran Alliance (Class B)

New Calenaton Spaceport, 21:06

With Juan Jungalo’s Striker threatening to be outpaced by UrbanMechs, bicyclists, and joggers due to motive damage, the journey back to base is painfully slow.  You aren’t even halfway there when Periphery’s Finest’s command lance, transport lance, and Engineering Vehicle pass you going the other way.  XO Thames radios you from the cockpit of his Locust.

“Better hurry it up, mechwarriors,” he says.  “If I make it back to base before you do, I’m going to have you sweeping the tarmac at the spaceport.”

Knowing the XO doesn’t make empty threats, you quickly try to jury rig an assisted tow of the Striker using Dana Tuff’s Heavy BattleMech Recovery Vehicle.  It helps a little, but you still can’t go faster than 30kph.  You keep an eye on your radar and your rear cameras, but you don’t see anything…until…

You’re no more than 10 minutes away from your assigned area of the spaceport when the Karnov VTOLs of Periphery’s Finest’s transport lance zoom by you at their full 150kph.  You don’t think anything of it, since the XO’s Locust isn’t anywhere to be seen, but when you arrive back at base you see the XO stepping out of the infantry bay of one of the Karnovs…

Once you’ve all dismounted, the XO has you line up with your brooms and start sweeping in a line abreast.  Any time someone gets too far ahead of or behind Dana Tuff, the XO orders the whole line to go back to the point you started from.  He keeps doing this until you’ve successfully covered a distance of 100 meters without breaking formation.  An hour or so later Periphery’s Finest’s command lance returns to base with Hershey Pinchas driving the XO’s Locust.  Once he’s dismounted the XO has all of you sweep the tarmac again, only this time you restart every time Hershey Pinchas falls out of line.  Once you’ve covered the 100 meters again, the XO marches you all to the briefing room where Miss Black is waiting for you.

“I hope you all found the XO’s team building exercise helpful,” she says once you’re seated.  “While mercenary work is lucrative, our budget for internal operations like this is not unlimited.  While you were mostly successful in your objectives, having to mobilize Periphery’s Finest to recover Hershey Pinchas and his Crab has put us over budget this month, and I’m taking the difference out of your paychecks.  Remember this the next time you are assigned to an internal operation.”

Miss Black turns to address Hershey Pinchas and Trinity Vesper directly.

“Pinchas, Vesper, once you’ve been cleared by the medics I want to see each of you with twenty hours logged in tumbling drills before your next assignment.  I don’t blame you for what happened, but I also don’t want to see a repeat of this ever again if it can be helped.  We’re very fortunate we only had one KIA on this mission.”

She pauses for a moment.  Her face is briefly awash with guilt before she resumes her usual facade and turns back to address all of you.

“The funeral service will be tomorrow at 10:00 and I expect to see you all there.  Dismissed.”

Tom,

You were out of AC10 ammo for the Centurion, so that was not reloaded.  Let me know if you would like to revise your turn to include the purchase of ammo for your Centurion.

Your turn is otherwise complete.  Check the sheet for mistakes and let me know if you spot anything amiss.

Service is super spotty out in the back country, so I'll try and cover as many bases as much as possible in case I don't get another window before the deadline.

**Repairs:**

Griffin - everything but ammo. Total repairs on the sheet is 55, my understanding is that ammo is 1WP.
- 54 WP, - 5 TD

Crab? - total repair. I don't know how we recovered the chassis, but I'm not complaining; the mercy does not go unappreciated. If it's actually a total loss, just ignore this next section. I know 15 TD would put me over, but I believe partial progress rules apply? If not, I'll hold off on those repairs for another, less busy window.
-75 WP, -10/15 TD

**Total:**
- 129 WP (57 remaining)
- 15 TD (0 (or -5?) remaining)

I'm not clear on the salvage rules and haven't had the chance to give them a proper look, but I don't believe I can sell units without being in command and wouldn't have a mech bay available to do the repairs necessary for making said sale, so I don't _think_ there's anything profitable I can do with the Jackrabbit.

It looks like I also did not remember salvage rules correctly. I don't see anything listed for TD cost for the Jackrabbit, so do I understand correctly that I can claim it, sell it as-is for 50WP, of which I pay a portion to Tom?

If there's no downsides to doing this, I would like to add that action to my turn.

Hey KC,

Please read the rules regarding "in command" and what actions are allowed while out of command.

KC,

Since there's a lot of rules around this that we haven't gotten to use that much I thought I'd take the opportunity to explain some things so everything's clear.

At present you can't claim the Jackrabbit.  There's two reasons for this: First, you're not in command; Second, you still have your full lance of mechs.  If the Crab had been totally destroyed then you would be able to replace it either with salvage or by purchasing a new mech, but since it's only got a destroyed gyro, you can't buy it.

Even if you could salvage the Jackrabbit, it's not really profitable to claim it and then sell it in this specific case, because the Jackrabbit is damaged.  This wasn't explicitly mentioned in the debrief, but if you look in the Arms Merchant tab of the spreadsheet, you'll find the Salvage list which gives the status of any units which can be salvaged.  In this case, with the Jackrabbit being Damaged, you would have to pay Tom 50WP, then repair it for 13WP for a total cost of 63WP, and you would only get 55WP back when you sold it.

Also, while there's no hard rule against flipping the occasional salvage unit for some extra WP, it's frowned upon when done in excess.   There's probably no way that this can be exploited to the extent it was the last time I had to look at these rules, but I'll revisit a rules proposal I offered up the last time we had to review them: AA could sell off all available salvage before leaving a world with the proceeds being divided evenly amongst all active players.

Let me know if you have questions about any of this.  I know there's a lot of rules and some get used less frequently than others.  I'm running the game and I still have to look stuff up all the time.

Allen
