Aggravated battery - Shooting - 2800 Block of Conti Street

On Monday, August 16, 2010 at approximately 7:51 pm, First District
Officers were dispatched to the
2800 Block of Conti Street in reference to an aggravated battery by
shooting. The dispatcher
advised the responding officers a Hispanic male was reportedly shot in
the stomach at the location.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, suffering from a gunshot
wound to the stomach.
The victim stated he was repairing a vehicle parked near the rear of a
yard in the 2800 Block of Conti Street when three black males
approached him and asked for a light for a cigarette.

The victim stated the subjects appeared to be young young black males
young in appearance. Subject # 1 is described as wearing a white tee
shirt. Subject # 2 one had on a black tee shirt. The victim could not
provide any
additional information at this time. The victim stated the three
perpetrators began to get close to him, which made him fear for his
safety. The victim grabbed a wooden stick. As the victim grabbed the
stick, the subject # 1 pulled a small semiautomatic handgun and handed
it to subject # 2. Subject # 2 fired on round from the handgun
striking the victim in the stomach.

Plice and EMS personnel who arrived on scene and transported the
victim to University Hospital for emergency treatment.

The victim is listed in serious condition.

This invesitgation is ongoing.
