Aggravated Battery - Cutting - North Claiborne and Esplande Avenue

On Thursday, August 12, 2010 at approximately 11:40 pm, police were
dispatched to
the intersection of North Claiborne Avenue and Esplanade Avenue in
reference to a fight which originated
from The Vibe Nightclub located in the 1600 Block of Esplanade
Avenue.

Officers responding to the location were advised an aggravated battery
by stabbing may have occurred at the location during the fight. As
officers responded to the scene, a detective relocated to University
Hospital and discovered the victim, was in the emergency room
suffering from a stab wound to his left
upper back area. The detective was able to briefly interview the
victim before medication was administered.

The victim stated the disc jockey at "The Vibe" nightclub stabbed him.
The victim identified his attacker as "Hasan Matthews". The detective
recognized the perpetrators name from a previous incident and had
obtained an arrest warrant for him for an aggravated battery which
occurred at the exact location on March 26, 2010.

The detective notified officers on scene of the perpetrators name and
information. The victims condition prevented the detective from
obtaining a complete interview at the time.

Officers who were at the scene located and arrested Hasan Mathews at
the intersection of North Derbigny Street and Esplanade Avenue. Hasan
was arested and charged for aggravated battery on the victim.

Hospital staff advised the victim had a single stab wound to the upper
left area of the back and that the victim had blood inside of his
lungs, he was listed in serious/stable condition.
