is anyone of those who were on the ride on Monday planning to go to court about those tickets? I am, with the argument that it was impossible for the cops to make certain which riders did and did not stop at that stop sign. In addition, the cops who wrote my ticket did not witness the "infraction" since he was parked in a cop car half-way down Olive Hill (or perhaps even came later, I think one or two of them joined the party a few minutes late).

Also, my ticket says "20mph" for speed, and as far as I was able to hear on Monday some or most of the others said "5+mph". Could someone with the "5+" ticket send me a copy/scan of it please? Also, some people took pictures of the cop cars on Olive Hill, I think it would be useful to have those as well.

Thanks,

Valery

Hello all,

I was not on the ride in question, but I did receive a citation for
'not coming to a complete stop' at a stop sign. I forget the cross
street, but it was one of the T's if you're coming back from Canada
rd. Anyway, just received my notice of bail for $423!! Really?!!?

So, any experience with this? Thoughts on best next step? I don't
see trying to fight it being very effective, though would appreciate
feedback on the topic. Traffic school seems like a waste, since
apparently the 'bicycle use' part of the citation will keep it off the
DMV's records and therefore my insurance.

Thank you all! and happy pedaling.

Nathan

Hello Nathan,

$423 is unconstitutional!
This is TOTAL BS! Did you think about joining the Tea Party?? :)))))))

I recently got a ticket for a not stoping during a right turn at a red light: $454!
I guess they treated it just like a red light violation...

Anyway, decided to go to the court: it went pretty smoothly, the whole process took 1.5hr maybe.
The judge does take of $100 off citation that are above $400, this is pretty much a given.
So if you have some time to waste, you could save $100.

Good luck!

Watch out! From this weekend:

repost from PenVelo group:
--------------------------------
After turning at Roberts Market, the Saturday AM ride was swarmed by about two patrol cars and three motorcycle cops across from Woodside School. I was up near the front at the intersection and came to almost a stop (balancing on my pedals, but probably still rolling a bit, so technically, yes, I am guilty too). I looked both ways - no traffic and no cops - before starting up again. The police were not taking any excuses and gave everyone a citation saying that they blew through the stop sign at 10+ mph even though that was not true. As usual, once the front starts going through everyone else follows them. The police held up the ride for about a half hour and issued about 30 - 40 tickets to the entire group.

Later as I continued on with four other guys, we approached Page Mill Road after going over the hill at Arastradero. On the corner there was a pickup truck pulled off onto the dirt. Two guys sitting in it looked suspiciously like police, though they were not in uniform. Sure enough, up at the Park and Ride lot at Page Mill and 280, the sheriff's squad car was lurking yet again. We stopped at both stop signs, so there was no problem, but everyone should be aware that not seeing a cop at an intersection does not mean it is OK to breeze through. It looks to me like they are getting very tricky and possibly having plainclothes officers alerting the uniformed police to make the busts.

oooh,  that's a bummer!!!

So, I learned my lesson after getting a similar ticket on Canada coming down to Glenwood.  Cop gave me a ticket for 1) not stopping at a stop sign 2) bicycle authority (basically that bikes need to follow car laws).

When I received my notice of bail it was a whopping $423!!!  When I went to court though the judge basically ignored the stop sign violation.  When I asked about it at the desk, the clerk said that the bicycle ticket should have wiped out the stop sign ticket.  Instead, when the bail notice was issued, they compounded them.  So, I paid $104.  Not fun, but worth the trip to court considering I saved $320.

On to another question for the group:  What is the path next to Canada rd, Whiskey Hill, etc considered?  And are bikes allowed on it?    Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
