The following quote is typical pro-car bias:
"Some of the bike riders are not the best when it comes to dealing
with vehicles and certainly we're going to have a lot of people
driving cars that aren't willing to share the road," (Lieutenant)
Lunny said.

Obviously the responsibility of care is on the overtaking driver, not
on Bruce, who had every right to be where he was. Why this sort of
"balance" is necessary in what was a clear case of vehicular assault
is hard to rationally comprehend.

Dan,

While I agree there is pro-car bias we could also do a better job.

On busy roads like Alpine and Portola we should never be more than two
abreast and do our best to not be too far over the white line. Whether
we like it or not, in the eyes of most motorists, that white line
defines the separation between where cars should be and where bikes
should be. All it takes is one wacko, senile, myopic or drugged out
car driver to spoil our day- lets not make it too easy for them.

Do we have any info on how Bruce is doing?

This whole narrative needs to be reconstructed to better the
situation.

We need to focus on safety. We have the right to ride on the road,
to be visible and to block cars when it is unsafe to ride in the
bike lane or to pass other cyclists. When people in the ride do
unsafe things, we should be talking to them and taking care of
each other. If we are not %100 sure we are making things better,
then that tiny bit of thoughtlessness on our part, gives away our
ability to say we did nothing wrong. And that little bit of grey area
is what the whole anti-cyclist rhetoric rests on.

I spoke to the people riding right behind Bruce, and I was told the
group was single file at that point. Bruce reacted to someone
avoiding a bump or otherwise squiggling just in front of him, and it
was then that he was hit. I agree, defensive cycling has to be our
credo, but in this case, what else could have been done other than not
ride? I heard but cannot confirm that the driver was behaving
suspiciously beforehand, as if in a game of chicken.

Someone said that it was a white Ford F150 pickup truck that was the
perp. If it was an older one (90's model) driven by a guy with gray
hair and a ponytail, then this is not the first time that guy has pulled
this kind of crap on Alpine Road. I would not at all be surprised to
find out it was the same guy.
