However, Niner did just that. In reality, Niner developed a completely new chassis to be worthy of Ninerโ€™s RDO designation, an acronym for โ€˜Race Day Optimized.โ€™ The AIR 9 RDO is an entirely different animal, clearly aimed to place you on the podium. And on top of this, weโ€™ve specโ€™d it with the Shimano XT Complete Mountain Bike kit in order to ensure that this statement remains true. And while this frame shares the AIR 9 name with Ninerโ€™s versatile carbon hardtail, thatโ€™s about all that they have in common. Niner eliminated all excess on this frame, and focused solely on making it as light as possible. For example, the rear brake mounts are now cleanly located inside the stays. This reduces the amount of hydraulic line needed, as well as making the AIR 9 RDO look lean and mean. Also, this frame doesnโ€™t use Ninerโ€™s CYA bottom bracket system. And although CYA is renowned for its versatility, it would have added complexity and heft to this purpose built race machine. So, Niner went with the lighter PressFit30 interface instead. However, the RDO does retain the clean internal cable routing and titanium chain-slap protectors found on the AIR 9 Carbon. The AIR 9 RDO isnโ€™t just cosmetically and physically different โ€” itโ€™s structurally different, too. At the core of every Niner frame is extensive computer-based, finite element analysis. And with the RDO, itโ€™s used to develop a high modulus carbon fiber structure with optimized weaves, lay ups, and tube shapes. Accordingly, this strategy produced the lightest Niner to date. The RDOโ€™s fluid form is no accident, either. In fact, itโ€™s designed to dampen chatter and guide impact forces to the stronger parts of the frame. Now, chain torque goes directly to the rear wheel via the large bottom bracket shell and shapely chainstays, yet trail vibrations are quelled by the swooping seatstays. Further along these lines, Niner tied the bottom bracket to the strength- and precision-enhancing tapered head tube via a large down tube. This ensures that the frame tracks true and responds to every input. Leading the AIR 9 RDOโ€™s charge is a FOX FLOAT 29 CTD with 100mm of travel. CTD, or Climb, Trail, and Descend, is a three position switch to quickly adjust the forks tuning for the conditions on hand. It has a 15mm thru axle upon which an Easton EA70 XCT wheelset rides. The wheels are wrapped in Schwalbe Rocket Ron 2.25in tires, and while the wheels are tubeless ready, we ship them with tubes installed โ€” allowing easy future upgrades. The drivetrain is adorned with Shimanoโ€™s stalwart XT cranks, cassette, chain, and shifters. Also, keeping speed in check are XT hydraulic disc brakes. For the cockpit, the bike features Eastonโ€™s EA70 bars, stem, and seatpost, with a Selle Italia SL Kit Carbonio saddle topping it off.
