Beth Kavka: we are going to talk a little about what your
organizations are planning in second life, what you are learning,
benefits, and challenges
Updates: Annie Octavia
we have 7 spaces open
the move in process has begun for everyone
Coughran Mayo: I ve been asked by two peopple about signing up for
space
Beth Kavka: you should give them Susan's email, she is the first
point of contact
You: the first contact is susan tenby. she is the lead, and keeps the
order of requests, and delegates out tasks regarding new people coming
in
Annie Octavia asked for a show of hands who is subscribed to the
google group list, who has visited the wiki, who has signed up to blog
at the web
Perhaps half are one the list, perhaps a quarter had visited wiki, and
fewer signed up at the web to blog.
Want to stress how rich the wiki already is, and encourage
participation both there and at the website.

Updates: SaveGuimaras Wind
following up on people who havent chosen an office space yet
Horizon Health which is having trouble moving in. havent heard from
them yet
we have to let them know that there are other tenants waiting. so if
they cant keep their space active, we might have to take some
immediate action.
Annie:i am finding that people who are not actually in sl, do not
comprehend the learning curve
Kopilo Hallard: AngelAID is moving in, waiting upon some things to be
made
Troy McLuhan: Cybrary City requires its tenants to spend at least two
hours in world on Cybrary City sim per week
Coughran Mayo: yes would it be legitimate to ask every group with a
space to submit a timeline for development what they will do, by when,
and let them know up front that if they dont' follow through their
space can be forfeited
[8:49] Beth Kavka: and to encourage them to post questions or
requests for help to the listserv, at least we can try to provide some
advice .. to pointers to resources
In Kenzo: what do you need from the greater community here? mentoring
new builders?
You: each org seems to have some unique needs, but i think there is a
need for strategy too.nice to have an idea of audience target, mission
Ozma Malibu: heres what happened to us - we realized we were over the
prim allowance without even getting the major projects displayed - so
are starting over with the projects first. :-) in other words we just
redidt the strategy. so something like that could happen to others, I
mean. fits and starts.
In Kenzo: you have a prim budget now?
Coughran Mayo: yes a very low prim budget
You: 200
Creech Antwerp: Hi Kenzo, Personally I'd like someone who can help me
organize and setup space.
Docent Alturas: Creech, I'm happy to help.
In Kenzo: i'd be open to coming by for an open building session, to
answer questions and help out
Beth Kavka: Maybe that is something we can scehdule?
Beth Kavka: raise your hand if you'd be interested in attending a open
build session? over half respond
In Kenzo: best when people help each other thru it. talking on skype
as you're building also helps.
Coughran Mayo: we can talk about low prim furniture that looks decent
though?
In Kenzo: the basics, how to create signs that link to your website,
that sort of thing is essential.
Beth Kavka: I'd love to know that one, In Kenzo should tell us what
Friday shed's like to do that, and then we designate that meeting for
open build
Docent Alturas: Streaming video to a screen
Rik Riel: someone should collect a wish list of things people want to
learn, or post it to a wiki page
In Kenzo: next friday is ok for that, that's the only friday i can
commit to.
Frank Foley: some things, like streaming video to a screen, are also
explained on the wiki
Beth Kavka: let's brainstorm right now. everyone take a minute and
type what you'd like to learn
Beth Kavka: I want to learn how to make bill board
Docent Alturas: Developing multiple scenes using holodeck technology
In Kenzo: and there are great video tuturials out there now too, on
how to create interactive message boards and linkable bulletin boards.
Coughran Mayo: making and distributing thinc books
Troy McLuhan: Scripts to give a notecard or a landmark on touch are
also very good to have
Bluewave Ogee: i like all of these suggestions
Rik Riel: low-prim building that looks decent
Jackson Soderstrom: how to make a donation basket
Kopilo Hallard: I can provide scripts which distribute notecards or
lms depedant on the contents of an object
Docent Alturas: Collect resource links and landmarks for a NPC
building tour
In Kenzo: jackson, sent you a script for that.
In Kenzo: there's a handful of scripts mentioned....geturl, notecard
and map tools, donation box, all easy to configure.
Rik Riel: also the give object script is useful
Susan and Beth K will coordinate date with In Kenzo
Updates: Frank Foley
the bug list has been resent to ACS and they said they will work on it
this week
so some of hte bugs may have already been fixed
they also asked for more quicksand coords
is this still a problem? i haven't experienced it lately
if so, email me with the coords of any place that it happens
i believe i also removed all the blank signs from everyone's office.
if i missed someone let me kinow
Annie: please also list bugs, quicksand on the wiki http://npsl.wikispaces.com
Kopilo Hallard: little off topic, just wondering if offices on the
npsl website could have slurls
Coughran Mayo: we can create our own, right?
Rik Riel: the ideal would be a clickable map with slurls, or a page
of logos
Frank Foley: just go to slurl.com
In Kenzo: www.slurl.com, it's easy, i haven't used the scripted ones
since they went wonky with SL updates
Frank Foley: http://slurl.com/build.php
Troy McLuhan: How to make a SLURL: 1) Go to the place, 2) Top menu -
World - Create Landmark Here - Show on Map - Copy SLURL to clipboard
Beth Kavka: we have about 26 minutes left to this meeting. I was
hoping we could get folks to touch briefly about their
experience so far in SL what benefit sto their nonprofits?
What challenges they face in the organization explaining it to
executive director?
Ozma Malibu: ok, well we just put everything back in inventory but
this weekend the first project goes in.
we are working with mixtecans in Mexico who live traditional arts-
based lives
to preserve their culture, we are helping them sell their work
so last week some floaters went down and took photos of them and their
work
and we have a whiteboard and will show the photos
and will have some video as well.
Troy McLuhan: You will be asked: Why can't we just do that on a
website?
Beth Kavka: Troy .. have you been asked that question?
Ozma Malibu: and weve tried just doing it on the website. but in SL
Troy McLuhan: No, my organization was born and raised in SL
Kopilo Hallard: sl is more interactive then a website
Ozma Malibu: in SL there is a greater sense of presence.
Beth Kavka: Ozma .. do you convince them if they skeptic?
Ozma Malibu: plus we can have teeny tiny bits of jewelry to sell for a
miniscule amount
Troy McLuhan: Right, so *presence* - the feeling that you are together
with someone else in the same space
Coughran Mayo: plus it is small enough yet that you can make good
contact with "early adopters" in big organizations
Ozma Malibu: then people who are interested can link to the actual
work
In Kenzo: Nonprofits in SL can do so much with interactivity, the e-
portfolio and media presentation is a good start but needs to be
paired with direct encounters with people.
Ozma Malibu: we are bringing one of the ladies here to AZ for f2f but
the paperwork takes a long time.
In Kenzo: It's easy to create a flat space in SL....a few signs, a
video, nothing that keeps people engaged for more than a minute. It's
about finding new ways to tell your story and share it with others in
an engaging way....
Ozma Malibu: she walked 8 days to oahaca to get her birth certificate
&then there were riots there.
In Kenzo: See, now there's a very interesting story.
Ozma Malibu: we are working through a couple of universities to get
her to visit
Beth Kavka: yes .. I want to know more ozma .. will you bring her
story into second life?
In Kenzo: how do you bring it to life for people? this is a challenge
we're constantly looking at, and Troy has done a great job making his
experiences real in that regard.
Kopilo Hallard: this would be good for the blog
Ozma Malibu: yes, the story is incredible. the trouble always is
respecting privacy, but she is beyond that
Coughran Mayo: In Kenzo do you think there is value in real time
lectures and seminars
In Kenzo: video is a great tool and voice will change everything. for
lectures and group discussions. soon we won't be typing much....
Troy McLuhan: Text-based meetings do have their advantages over voice-
based meetings. Check out the article in Terra Nova yesterday:
http://terranova.blogs.com/terra_nova/2007/05/teaching_in_sec.html
SaveGuimaras Wind: i want to suggest some thing, though its not here
in SL. Ive been writing for a citizen journalism site called
ohmynews.com and its a great way to promote your orgs. im going to try
to invite the editor to SL because they want to promote ohmynews more
Johnny Austin: ok I will tyr to be short and direct since i have to
leave on about 10 minutes
fisrt, please go to http://www.joysco.com/
it will show you the basic ionfo on our huge event
it was on amlsot every SL newspaper
and what we did was
In Kenzo: /really smart!
Beth Kavka: how did you get in every sl newspaper?
Johnny Austin: we brough people and business together, some RL , and
most SL
In Kenzo: this looks to be a great event that everyone wanted to see
happen, easy to promote
Johnny Austin: myself is a professional marting person, plus the event
with vrey large scale, so
all the new reporters were very interested
and by doig that event
Beth Kavka: how did you pitch them?
Johnny Austin: we have brought many people to be more aware of of NPO
Coughran Mayo: can I suggest that a couple of us join johnny and set
up a media relatons committee
In Kenzo: I love the idea and it looks like you planned it out very
well!
Beth Kavka: great idea
Kopilo Hallard: good idea
Coughran Mayo: meet with all the press in SL
Beth Kavka: great idea ..
Coughran Mayo: manage news releases
Kopilo Hallard seconds the motion
In Kenzo: Keep up this great line of work.
Coughran Mayo: make it look professional
Rik Riel: I'm happy to help
Johnny Austin: the pictch is really no pictch, Beth :) If thte event
is interesting and benefits everyone, reporters will take notice :)
Beth Kavka: do you contact them in world or email? or both
what does a SL event press kit look like?
Johnny Austin: and we also had a press only conforence right before
the event
Beth Kavka: Johnny, I think you should write a small piece for the
blog about what you learned .. what advice would you give us all ...
about getting "ink" for your event
Johnny Austin: to be hornest with all of you, I think just writing is
not effective , in terms of SL it willbe much easier and better if we
talk and do it :)
In Kenzo: it's easy to connect with most editors inworld.
Johnny Austin: here is a sample link to SLNN.com
http://www.slnn.com/index.php/article/about/good-samaritans.html
In Kenzo: how many SL media groups are there now?
at least 10 that i know.
Troy McLuhan: 10 major ones, maybe 100 minor ones
In Kenzo: plus podcasters, other bloggers like beth and rik who
rock.....
Bluewave Ogee: OK - well would it be possible to consolidate this info
for us somewhree? :-)
Rik Riel: http://secondlife.techsoup.org/node/57
Beth Kavka: http://npsl.wikispaces.com/Press+List
Johnny Austin: SL is menat to be interactive and by wirting is is
good, but having interactive with them is much better
Bluewave Ogee: I agree -- Yet we also have to meet people "where they
are"...and for some, that's reading about it in the newsprint,
etc....As a start
Rik Riel: there are a range of issues surrounding how to do effective
outreach beyuond just assembling a list. but it's a start.
i.e. timing of your event, real press versus vritual press, creating a
hook, etc
In Kenzo: we've talked about hosting a series of events here, and
there's no reason why a special tour for the media that would be
helpful on the content side.
Coughran Mayo: I note Rik, Johnny and myself maybe volunteering for
this committee?
Bluewave Ogee: I am interested
SaveGuimaras Wind: me too.
Coughran Mayo: ok five should be enough
Beth Kavka: I propose that those of you who would like to be on the pr
committee
sign up here
http://npsl.wikispaces.com/Marketing+and+PR+Committee
Troy McLuhan: It's important to understand that SL has many *groups*,
all with their own communications channels, like blogs or group IMs or
"Group Notices"
Johnny Austin: so to sum up my talk :) i think we need to be more
interactive and be working with each other more as leaders
SaveGuimaras Wind: i propose that every friday one org or two would
have a 2 min presentation
Beth Kavka: it would be nice to incorporate 10-15 minutes of our
meeting on friday
Coughran Mayo: five mins each should work
Seed Lane: that was my first meeting and i have to thank you all
Jackson Soderstrom: can we have the google group URL again?
http://groups.google.com/group/TechSoup-Second-Life
In Kenzo: an someone reach out to dave radio?
he offered to place an ad for the NPC for four months in metaverse
messenger.
Mikey Geary: yes
Beth Kavka: I'll grab the ideas for InKenzo's building idea . and put
on wiki
Mikey Geary: Ill tell dave
SaveGuimaras Wind: ill write to dave for follow up
In Kenzo: I'm inworld quite a bit this next week if any of you need a
moment of building help, then traveling (I get to see BETH!) from 5/27
- 6/13
okay, shall we call it ms. k?
Coughran Mayo: move to adjourn
You: second
woooohoooo!
Adalace Jewell: pls do not leave yet
i still have to move in, but i made a little gadget for all of you
this laptop labeled nonprofit commons
if that's okay i will give everyone of you a copy
As promised, I grabbed the topics for the Open Build Session and put them on
the wiki
http://npsl.wikispaces.com/Programming
We talked about devoting one of the upcoming Friday meetings to this - so we
need a date.
Also, if you weren't at the meeting and have some suggested topics, please
add them.
If anyone has a sense of how to the topics scaffold - i.e. from beginner to
advance - please feel free reorganize the order - they are in random order
from the chat.
Also, a few folks mentioned online tutorials. If someone could insert the
URL of the tutorial by each topic - that would be awesome. I have some
how-tos on the wiki in another section: http://npsl.wikispaces.com/How+To --
not sure I have how-tos for everything on the list.
B.
I added the earlier email from Dave Radio - need for follow up -- thanks
Dave!
