There should be a key with a name matching the name of the local Vault View. If the registry key for the Vault View is missing, or if the entire Database key is missing, they will need to be re-created.

SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional installation for the 2017 release is now carried out through the SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager. The installation can be selected from the Installation Manager Welcome page, under Server products as shown in the figure below:

In SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional and Standard, your Workflow can be set up to automatically increment the revision value as a file moves through the approval process. Looking through the properties of the States and Transitions in a pre-established workflow you might have noticed a number of settings related to revision information. You might be wondering how these all work together. Here is a basic overview of how a workflow will automatically increment the SOLIDWORKS PDM Revision.

Now that the State knows what revision number is assigned to it and how much the revision number is incremented by, the Transition can be set up to use that information to perform an automatic increment of that Revision Number.

Consider performing the move in increments, especially if the archive is very large. The 16 archive folders are each moved as a unit, so the move can be done in increments of as little as 1/16 or roughly 6.3% at a time.

If the vault is very very large (for instance several hundred gigabytes of data), then you may want to consider performing a manual move and redirecting of the Archive Folder registry values instead of using the Relocate functionality in the Archive Server Configuration tool. You can contact your SOLIDWORKS Value Added Re-seller for further directions on how this can be done.

If you are encountering issues with the backups of the archive taking too long to perform because the vault is too large, relocating the archive will not help as it does not reduce the overall size of the archive. In that situation, you should consider also compressing the archive.

Step 3: Click OK. A warning will show reminding you to ensure that the users are not working in the vault (they can continue to work in Offline Mode), once you click OK the archives will begin to be moved. This process must be allowed to complete and should not be interrupted once it begins.

Now that SOLIDWORKS PDM (both Professional and Standard) is using the SolidNetwork License Manager for distributing licenses to clients, reserving SOLIDWORKS PDM licenses for specific users or groups of users is now possible. This is done through the SolidNetWork License (SNL) Manager Options File.

Step 5: Now we write our Options File. First the groups will need to be defined. These are not the groups already setup in SOLIDWORKS PDM. The SNL Manager has no idea that those groups exist, so the groups for the purpose of reserving licenses MUST be explicitly defined in the Options File.

The correct syntax will be to have the Option Keyword, in this case GROUP, followed by the group name, then each user name that is a member of the group, each separated by a space. This is the PDM username NOT the Window username, which would be the case if you have set up groups to reserve SOLIDWORKS licenses. So if you have already defined groups of users in the Options File to reserve SOLIDWORKS licenses, you may need to create entirely new groups, with different usernames to reserve the PDM licenses. So as an example, we can define two groups for whom we want to ensure there will always be a license available, the senior designers and the PDM administrators:

This is then followed by the actual reserve option definition. The correct syntax will be to have the Option Keyword, in this case RESERVE, followed by the number of licenses to reserve, followed by GROUP and then the name of the group, each separated by a space. So if we need to reserve three SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional CAD Editor licenses for the three senior designers, but just one PDM Professional Contributor license to be shared between the two administrators (who are not using SOLIDWORKS), we will add:

In SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional, users can set up custom Search Favorites to dramatically speed up the process of finding relevant files. This is great functionality that can be a huge time saver, however, sometimes things can get a little out of hand and Search Favorites can become too much of a good thing.

A SOLIDWORKS PDM Notification can be added from the Local Vault, so that the logged in user will receive a message when a predefined event occurs to a file or folder. To set up these Notifications, right-click on the file or folder and select Notify.

Tasks rely on scripted Add-ins and SOLIDWORKS PDM ships with the Add-ins required for the tasks shown above. For those that are so inclined, you can create your own custom add-ins that will drive your own custom tasks

Now that you are about to embark on all the fun and excitement that comes with upgrading to SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional or PDM Standard; how do you get all your legacy data moved over from your old SOLIDWORKS Workgroup PDM Vault? You need a good strategy!

The steps for migrating data from your current SOLIDWORKS Workgroup PDM Vault will depend on the set-up of your current environment. Generally, there are four groups of files that may need to be migrated to your new PDM system:

Project files are your design files and should exist in your Workgroup Vault. Before creating a back-up for an upcoming migration, you want to first Check-in the latest Revisions of all files. At this point, no new files should added to your Workgroup Vault, unless they will ONLY be managed by the Workgroup Vault.

Tools such as SOLIDWORKS Explorer Contains and Where Used, as well File > References in SOLIDWORKS, can help determine the location of files, that may have never been checked into the Workgroup Vault. These files should also first be checked in.

There is no tool in Workup PDM to create a back-up of vaulted files. Typically this is done by third party software, but a back-up can be created manually, by copying and pasting the Vault Data folder. The default name of the folder is VaultData, but it can differ. The location of the Vault Data, may be on a different server than where Workgroup PDM was installed. The location of the VaultData folder can be obtained from the Workgroup PDM VaultAdmin, under the Vault Management tab as shown below:

The location of Standard Library files can vary from company to company. They may be located in the Workgroup Vault, which means the files will be backed up along with the vault. If your Standard Libraries are outside the Vault and were defined through the SOLIDWORKS Design Library, you can determine the location of these Libraries from within SOLIDWORKS by selecting Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations > Design Library.

Support files include Part, Assembly and Drawing Templates but may include other items such as, Sheet Formats, Hole Callout Format Files and Sheet Metal Gauge Tables. If you intend to add these Support files to your PDM Standard or Professional vault, you should back these up as well. The location of the support files can be determined from inside SOLIDWORKS via Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations.

NOTE: There may be other groups of files that you need to be migrated to your SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard or Professional vault. Carefully examining your current set-up, both in Workgroup and SOLIDWORKS, will help you identify these additional file groups.

How do you ensure everyone is working on a project within your company, and those involved from the outside, are connected and updated in real-time for true collaboration? They could be situated locally or around the world in our global economy, but they need to be kept aware of changes and updates to not only files, but also products and projects. SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional includes the functionality to keep everyone aware and up-to-date while working on the same data sets without the fear of overwriting content.

Replication of data to any location ensures your staffs have fast local access to the files they require. No more waiting for assemblies to load from a remote location! No more emailing, setting up and managing FTP sites, Drop Boxes or moving files to Memory Keys for delivery to other locations! Each of those outdated approaches just adds to duplicate files in other locations and files that are out of synchronization. Time is of the essence now more than ever.

PDM Professional offers built-in Vault Replication features which includes the ability to schedule file replication to a timetable that matches your companies needs and requirements. Simply configure a schedule that allows the Vault files that you wish to be available in one or more remote locations to be replicated. No need to replicate the entire vault content if all the content is not required in the remote location. The replication schedule can be set to only move the folders and files that are required by the users who are away from the main vault server. To save on network bandwidth, after the initial replication, only the files that have been changed need to replicated going forward. The SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional system keeps track of what changes need to be replicated and to where. This maintains all locations with the same file content without the need to move every file.

Project drawing approvals from customers can be much more efficient when you implement the SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional WEB 2 interface. Do you require a vendor to view preliminary models and drawings for a budgetary quotation? Do you wish there was a way to ensure that the vendor used the latest version of a model or drawing instead of mistakenly using out-of-date copies? The SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional WEB 2 interface allows PC, IOS and Android based devices to access the SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional vault. Simply assign User Credentials for you customers and vendors to only access the content that you wish them to! Track their access using the SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional History and Log files. No more filling in document and file transmittal sheets to track what was sent to whom and when. All the logging is now automated with SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional and the WEB 2 Interface.
