I am so excited to be done with my MFA! As of Dec. 15th 2012, I am officially available for full-time employment! if you are a recruiter or HR rep please contact me at your earliest convenience here. I am looking for an entry level job or paid internship in apparel or fashion goods design, product development, or product coordination.

This post is going to highlight my recent Lectra training. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to train with a Lectra specialist from New York City and I even have a certificate to prove that I completed the official training with Rachel Scheib.

ONLINE short refresher course in which professional patternmakers study the last release of the CAD system Modaris Expert by Lectra (V8R2) and learn the use of all its tools needed to digitalize, create, register, modify, size grade and make a pattern lay plan on the screen.

Secoli graduates from patternmaking courses and professional patternmakers, who want to complete their training by learning how to use Modaris Expert by Lectra, CAD patternmaking software among the most required by the industrial manufacturing branch.

The on-demand lessons will be uploaded on the e-learning platform at the beginning of every learning section and they will remain available for the students for the entire duration of the course. The live lessons with the teacher will take place once a week from 6.30 pm to 7.30 pm or from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm according to a calendar communicated at the beginning of the course. Every module of the course is divided into 6 sections, each of which has a training workload of 5/6 hours. The detailed class timetable will be communicated on the first day of the course.

Alice Molteni is a teacher in CAD pattern design. She has gained work experience as a pattern maker into Italian companies in the fashion industry, including Paul & Shark for men's and children's lines. She specialized at Istituto Secoli where she has been teaching since 2011.

I am a draper/pattern maker with a background in creating custom patterns for the theater. My MFA training from [a reputable land grant college in a southern Atlantic state] specialized in draping, couture sewing techniques and clothing history. I have worked for over 10 years creating custom garments, including made to measurement patterns for private clients and theater productions. I have found that I love the pattern making side of the job and I am currently looking for a way to gain entry into the fashion industry as a way to expand the opportunities available to me. As I started a job search, I found that I am qualified for most jobs in every way except being trained on CAD (Gerber or Lectra) software. While I realize this is definitely a short coming, I strongly feel my years of experience in pattern making, fitting, and clothing construction make me a valid candidate for a career as a pattern maker.

I have looked into the local design schools for training but have been told that those classes are only offered to degree seeking students. I have also contacted both Gerber and Lectra, who both offer training in 2 week course but I have been advised that the skills need to be used daily to maintain the knowledge taught in the classes. Considering the training is fairly expensive I am reluctant to pursue it without some sort of job prospect. I am curious as to if you have any advice you can offer someone with a strong background in manual pattern making, as to how to make the transition into computer pattern making?

This is very difficult to answer based on your career options which are:

1. Freelancing for smaller firms

2. Working for a smaller domestic manufacturer in house

3. Working for a firm that does all their product development in the US.

I want to reinforce that costume or custom patternmaking and industrial pattern making are two very different animals. And my authority to say that is 30+ years in the garment industry and short stints sewing custom clothing and for the Dallas Ballet.

A lot of the bigger companies around here expect you to also know SolidWorks or some related flavor for industrial applications (not clothing). Is that common to the industry as a whole, or just commercial?

Kathleen,

I was very interested to read this post because my own background is similar to the writer you call Kelly. I have been going over and over your book all summer and recently joined the forum. The blogs and the tutorials are priceless! One difference between the writer and me is that rather than looking for a job, I want to start manufacturing. When I first started studying the book, I thought I would need to hire someone for every required role. As I kept studying though, I realized that I can provide some of the services I need myself, although I must say I would not be making this giant leap without all the education I am receiving from all of you. I am so grateful.

Lectra, the world leader in providing a comprehensive range of high technology solutions (CAD/CAM software/hardware) for the apparel industry, announced its gift last week. And as word leaked out, officials at Eastern voiced their excitement over the company's generosity.

According to Dilworth, the software Eastern will receive is used in major retail store design programs, including nine of the top 10 leading retailers. Its capabilities are many, including the on-line design of textiles; the creation of product lines, from conceptual sketch to final specifications and virtual prototypes; and merchandising. For example, one can develop a printed textile design, then send it electronically to a garment manufacturer and Web page viewing.

In addition, changes from mass production to non-minimum limit printing requests - also made possible through the software's applications - has created a high demand for digital color print designers.

"And Lectra is aware that its clients have a need for employees who are knowledgeable about this software and how to use it," Dilworth said. "There is a high demand for textile color print designers in a variety of industries, and a need for those designers to understand color compliance.

Eastern currently has about 90 students each in the FCS department's merchandising and consumer affairs programs who will benefit from these new learning opportunities. Others, too, will benefit, including students enrolled in Eastern's School of Technology's graphics communication program.
