This is one role which very few people are willing to take on, and even
fewer qualified to handle effectively. However, until the role is
filled, the project will keep thrashing about trying to figure out where
it is rather than getting actual work done.
We all do project management for whatever we take up, to a greater or
lesser degree in any case. A formally-designated project manager, on
the other hand, is IMO an absolute must for making the event successful.
You are looking for someone who:
1. Is not afraid of ruffling feathers.
2. Is ruthless in the interests of the event. If the PM finds someone
not meeting schedules on a continuing basis, s/he must be tough enough
to demand and get a replacement for that role.
3. Has some amount of authority (whether innate or granted) within the
community.
4. Has ample time -- PM is a demanding task.
5. Can handle people and inspire, cajole, threaten or bribe them into
delivering.
6. Has some experience with managing events, so knows which paths are
critical and which can be deferred, and
7. Is available as of yesterday.
I cannot stress the importance of getting a PM in place ASAP, everything
else (web site, talks, venue, formats, etc.) can follow. In fact,
everything else becomes an activity within the broader PM framework.
