Subject: money in politics -- campaigns and upcoming events in NYC
To:

Dear occupiers, organizers, and friends,

I'm passing on some information about upcoming events where people will be speaking out about money in politics and skewed budget priorities, plus a few links to ongoing campaigns.

You’re getting this email because you attended an Occupy assembly breakout group that I facilitated, or because I want to keep you in the loop.

(Please let me know if you’d prefer not to get emails about this issue.)

Last week Occupy Albany delivering a $2 Million check to Governor Cuomo to underscore his entanglement in the “pay to play” system.  They also call for a living wage.

On a similar note, Community Voices Heard has questioned Cuomo’s relationship with big business. http://www.cvhaction.org/CmteToSaveNY-April2012.

“Occupy candidate” George Martinez will speak about his campaign tomorrow Monday, 7:30-9:30pm, Yippie Café, http://www.nycga.net/events/event/george-martinez-campaign-support/  Check the website for last minute changes.

Thursday, June 14th, 4-7pm there will be a rally for “Clean & Fair Elections Now” organized by the Get Money out of Politics OWS group outside of Cuomo’s office, 633 3rd. Ave, between 40th and 41st St.   Contact Jarret for more information at skinny...@gmail.com.  Flyers are attached.

Contact Aaron Black at elchan...@gmail.com to join the

the-ows-end-corpora...@googlegroups.com.  This large affinity group is working on a big summer event and much more.  They would like help with in-reach and outreach.  Labor groups, Move On and others are involved.

Occupy Faith (http://occupyfaithnyc.com/) and Occupy Catholics continue to highlight the moral dimensions of unfair budgets and corruption with creative tactics http://occupycatholic.wordpress.com/2012/04/27/foot-washing-on-wall-street/

For information on “money out new york” and their crowd-sourcing approach see http://moneyoutpack.org/  Several national campaigns are now fighting to overturn the Citizens United ruling.  See, for example, http://freespeechforpeople.org/  and movetoamend.org.

There’s a wealth of information on constitutional amendments and fair elections at http://www.commoncause.org/site/pp.asp?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&b=4860187.  There’s also http://www.opensecrets.org/resources/ftm/ and more sites like it.

Citizen Action New York did a “knock for the 99%” around fair elections in May. Coverage of the bill now in Albany is at http://citizenactionny.org/2012/05/senate-democrats-introduce-fair-elections-legislation/8890

The Working Families Party is pushing for clean elections. http://www.workingfamiliesparty.org/our-issues/clean-elections/  For another take, see Maine’s legislation http://www.maine.gov/ethics/mcea/index.htm

In terms of upcoming Occupy gatherings where people can talk about the issues, process, actions, and campaigns, there are at least two possibilities...

A break-out group could meet at the second Feminist General Assembly in Washington Square Park, Monday, June 18th, 6:30pm. http://www.facebook.com/events/175078435948082/

Another possibility is Saturday June 16th and 23rd in Central Park Southwest for the “Summer Disobedience School” organized by OWS Direct Action.  See the attached PDF for more information or http://www.nycga.net/groups/direct-action/

I hope this is useful.  Feel free to let me know if there are others groups or upcoming actions you would like me to share via this list.

In case you are wondering, I’m not formally affiliated with any of these groups. I have loose connections to several of them.  I'm launching this little outreach effort because I care about this issue and I want to do what I can to promote communication across sectors and working groups.

Best wishes,

Grace
