I have been the administrator of Nomicron since the middle of round 1
six years ago... the time has come for me to step down. I have really
enjoyed my time running this game, and having the opportunity to
interact on an intellectual level with people from all over the world.
But, I'm afraid my heart has just not been in the game lately, and
recent developments in my personal and work life have limited the
amount of time I have had to spend on Nomicron. As such, I will also
no longer be a player, but rather an observer if the game should
continue.

What does this mean for Nomicron? It's really up to you... the
players. From a technical standpoint, there are a couple of options:

- I will continue to host the Nomicron wiki... this could be used to
run the entire game, but would be all manual page updating.

- The google group has "Pages" functionality that we were using for a
while, but stopped working in Firefox, so I disabled it in favor of
the wiki... this could be re-enabled (maybe it works better now). In
any case, I would set up the would-be administrator as a group admin.

- I would be willing to consider leaving the web application running
to handle basic voting, RFC and RFJ functionality. All points would
need to be entered manually, and it would work as-is. I may also be
willing to add new referendum types and time drops that just send out
results at the end of a turn, with a week's notice to create them, but
nothing beyond that. I could also give access to the subversion
repository if anyone wanted to do this stuff and whatever else. Keep
in mind that this option would limit some of the things you might like
to do with proposals, voting, etc, as I would not make any
modifications.

- The "suber" source code is open source... this is the java
application that runs Nomicron. If someone wanted to run an instance
of it elsewhere, there is nothing stopping you... the source is at
http://nomicron.org/svn/nomicron/

- Whatever else you may want to do.

Of course, this only matters if someone is willing to step in as
Administrator, and if the players of Nomicron want to keep it going...
if not, then that would leave the game in indefinite hiatus in
convention (unless a motion is passed to end the game), maybe to be
picked up at some point in the future.

Let me know what you want to do...

Thank you all for a great time!

I'd be willing to serve as administrator of Nomicron. If I did so, I
would prefer to host the game on my own server and write new code to
handle proposal submission, etc. I already have some of this framework
in place, but I would probably need some time (maybe a month) to
finish it up and have a workable system. In the interim we could
either remain in convention or use the existing website for the next
round. Of course, if someone else has a better idea, I'm not opposed
to that either.

I think players other than the Administrator also need to contribute in maintaining the code and the game. I definitely would want to help. But I do not know which language is used and how it works. Is subversion the main component? what are the other things that you are using for coding? If you (both Jef and BobTHJ) can point me to some manuals where I can start off, may be I can start contributing soon.

BobTHJ--I think that's great if you would like to step in as
Administrator and set up your own site for running the game! We can
work out the details of DNS, etc. when you are ready. One option is to
transfer the nomicron.com domain to you (I have this one as well as
nomicron.org--currently just redirects)... I have been using
nomicron.org and would like to keep that for the history of prior
rounds. Or, I could just point nomicron.org and www.nomicron.org to
you... or nomicron.com... many options here we can discuss.

Metaloop(Pavan)--the current nomicron code is java, but I don't know
what BobTHJ is planning to use. Honestly, the current code base is
overly complex and over-engineered, so I don't think is all that
viable for future use as only I really know what I did :). Subversion
is just the source repository where the code is kept.

I'm no longer a player so don't have a say in this, but I would
suggest a motion making BobTHJ the Administrator.
