Jef,
Would you consider some sort of status reported on a proposal that is
available for sponsorship? It seems that currently that status is only
reported to the mailing list and not visible on the RFC page or in the
Draft's page. (or do I not see it as the author?).

As the author, you don't see the button on the draft's page to
"Sponsor the Proposal". There is also a subtle clue on the
proposal--right under the Author line, there is a Sponsor line, but is
blank until someone takes sponsorship. I could add an indicator on the
list page of the RFC to make it easier to identify it from there...
