A new Request for Judgment has been submitted by Jef. pitboss has been selected as the judge on Case 6009

--------------

RFJ
[Title] Don't worry; be happy
[Creator] Jef
[Create Date] 2007-01-30 13:34
[Statement] The repeal of {Rule 1} would not interfere with the rules' authority to govern the game.
[Arguments] Suppose this statement is false. That is, the rules' authority does come directly from {Rule 1}. In that case, where did {Rule 1} get its authority to empower the rules? {Rule 1} cannot gain authority from itself; that would be a vicious circularity. Therefore, the governing power of the rules derives from a source outside of {Rule 1}, and would not be affected by that rule's repeal, Q.E.D.

(NOTE: this is Looney's RFJ--I am resubmitting this to fix the problem with no judge assigned... I'll correct the creator field if this works)
[Decision] Undecided
[Judge] pitboss
[Reasoning]

[Reasoning] Rule 1 is essentially a self-referential rule. As long as you agree that Rule 1 is a rule, you must abide by all rules. If you don't agree that Rule 1 is in effect, then essentially, you're not playing. As things stand today, without Rule 1, we can play the game, but ignore the rules where they are inconvenient.

This situation obviously leads to an unplayable state and thus, Looney wins this round of Nomicron. Nice play!

Congratulations, Looney! I believe this makes it as official as it can
be, given the circumstances. Of course, any player could choose to
ignore this ruling if they would like to, but I for one accept it.
Even if it wasn't Looney's intent to win the round, this was a clever
play, and one of the more interesting round endings.

I'd like to suggest that we now consider ourselves to be in
Convention, but that we take a month break before we start to plan for
the next round, or at least before we start with motions for the next
round. What say ye, friends?

Actually, I think we should have at least one motion immediately, just
to clean up the mess from this round's ending. Anything else we want
to do can wait. Here's the motion that I'm submitting now:

Motion: Unambiguous Game State

Round 7 of Nomicron is over; Looney is the winner of Round 7. The game
is presently in a convention state. All points, chips, and other game
entities from round 7 (except for players and rules) are hereby
destroyed.

In addition, the following rule shall be added to the convention
ruleset:

Rule 1 Follow the Rules
The game of Nomicron consists of a set of rules. Each rule has three
parts: a number, a title, and text. All players must always abide by
all rules currently in effect, in the form in which they are in effect.

Send your votes to vo...@nomicron.org for this motion. I will take care
of tabulating the votes for this motion. I had suggested we wait a
month before getting fully going on the Convention, but that is not
necessary if folks have ideas on round 8 they want to get out there.
Also, if anyone else would like to volunteer to run the convention,
that would be cool... I'll have the vo...@nomicron.org email address
redirect to whoever does it. The duties would be to keep track of the
motions and report on them to the public forum (google group) in
whatever manner they deem appropriate...
