Level of interest in a #NodeGirlsMelbourne, a one off Node School, etc.?

Hi,

Over the weekend I and a few others noticed there was a @NodeGirlsSydney - https://twitter.com/NodeGirlsSydney - but not an equivalent in Melbourne.

As a male coder that has benefited from using Node, I feel that it'd be great to give something back to the community by helping support a similar effort in Melbourne. I have a number of friends who are in the same situation; they're experienced Noders that would love to help out. However, I do not feel qualified to run this sort of group; in part, this post is just the offer of helping to make it happen if there is sufficient interest. It can even be about just taking the first step towards it ...

So, if there are female coders that would like to learn more about Node, please let us know here.

There are a number of options we could consider - a one off Node School one weekend or after a conference, perhaps a session or two with a learning format about Node at a meetup, etc..

I spoke to Kylie Gusset (@gusseting) about this and she agreed it was a good idea.  Andrey Sidorov (@sidorares) is going to post this to the Melbourne Node.js meetup and I will tweet this from the national twitter account @nodejsau.

Cheers,
Nicholas (@nicholasf).

Hi Nick -- I'd be keen to join. I'm digital marketer turned coder (self-taught) and recently moved to Melbourne, VIC from Vancouver, BC. Currently working at a new company and seems like I will using Node.js! Would love to learn more about Node and its hacks :)

Hey Nicholas,

I'm happy to see if there are women who would like to get involved from the RMIT SWITCH group. I'll keep you updated.

Cheers,

Hi Nick,

More than happy to spread the word about this and would love to get involved from the University of Melbourne's CISSA group.

Thanks,

Hao

Hi,
As an founder of NodeGirls Sydney I would be happy to help with organization and share our plans for our own educational modules for NodeGirls.
I can do video conference and share experience and I can come to Melbourne when needed to help up with organization. Can provide with sponsors as well.
Email me if you have any questions.

Thank you all for your responses so far.

Currently, the best idea seems to find a time to hold a "Node School for Girls" session; it's a matter of thinking about time and location. Tanya, I'll cc you on the emails I'm going to send out; thanks for volunteering. Great work with founding NodeGirlsSydney, by the way.

If you are unfamiliar with Node School, it's a series of guided lessons working through https://github.com/workshopper/learnyounode . We typically find a safe place and good location and let people work through each exercise, with more experienced Noders being on hand to answer questions and discuss Node.

If anyone else would like to play a part in organising this, please reply with your email and I will include you; that way you can play a definitive role in it from day one!

Cheers,
Nicholas

As an update, we are currently stuck on getting this off the ground. While a lot of people have been very positive about supporting this effort and recognise the need for a Melbourne equivalent to NodeGirlsSydney, we lack female leadership or a core local group of female Noders for it to happen.

Tanya is reaching out to her Melbourne network. If anyone has a wish to become involved let us know.

Cheers,
Nicholas

I'm positive about running NodeGirls Melbourne this year first time, for running it up you can have 1 person to do it as not much work needed to actually organize event itself.

I'm communicating on this question atm and will come to Melbourne in November to organize things for December.

Will write back soon, just atm busy with working on workshops.
