Hi Tobias,

I tried but with no luck. I even asked in Auckland JS meetup but nobody knows any company doing node.js, though some of them said they would be interested if there is such a company.

Now I'm preparing for interviews of several other job opportunities. I'll let you know if I find some company needing node.js guys.

Cheers
Sean

Did you find a job? I would love to work in a node.js environment, too.

Yup, definitely - and whilst I have a company which does Node.js it
can't yet support itself or anyone else.

In the past I had a contract with a US company doing Node.js and
recently almost got another one (except they wanted me to move to the
US - which I refused) but am hoping to get some more in the next few
months.

I did a presentation about Node.js at a Wellington company last Friday
too, and whilst they're all interested, it didn't look like they had a
use-case for it yet - probably my fault for not enunciating the
advantages better. :) Also, most work in NZ are just plain CMSs,
nothing where the power of streams, events, real-time data etc. really
shine.

Cheers,
Andy

P.S. It's the NZOSA awards in Wellington tonight - give me a shout if
anyone is going and I'll see you there (Francois, I know you're going,
so will catch up with you then).

When it comes to high performance I/O application, node.js shows its strength. I believe node.js can achieve the same performance as C/C++ program in I/O bound applications, with a much neater and maintainable code base.

Unfortunately most IT companies in NZ are working on enterprise IT services, not so much demand for high throughput and concurrency. Besides, most node.js components are small to medium sized projects, whose features are not very stable, whose documents are not well maintained -- not suitable for enterprise IT service.

I suppose the right niche for node.js should be an innovative Internet company aiming at serving millions of users.

@Andy I noticed you started http://nodejs.geek.nz/ . That's great! We are counting on you to establish the connection between companies needing node.js people and guys like us who are looking for jobs:) Could you describe what the site is gonna be like, and your plan? I would like to help if I have the ability.

What about joining a startup Sean?

I'm just in the process of validating an idea and would be keen on finding another node.js developer.

Another opportunity is that node is the perfect backend for realtime applications,
So, if you where a consultancy developing realtime apps, for web or mobile
(maybe on http://phonegap.com/ ?) then node would be ideal.

Andrew, prehaps you should just write a realtime CMS in node?

I played with PhoneGap and parse.com the other week. Stuffing data
from their JS API library into their systems was pretty easy - apart
from the ability to subscribe to notifications (not yet implemented)!
:( Another area Node.js shines. I did ask them about this but no
answer so far.

> Andrew, prehaps you should just write a realtime CMS in node?

True - not sure what it would look like (yet). I did have a go doing a
CMS in Perl many years ago but decided PHP already has that wrapped up
and Perl people do their own thing. I suspect a CMS for Node.js
wouldn't take off even though there are a few out there already. I
suspect a project which is more akin to real-time is more suited (ie.
a non-CMS). :)

Cheers,
Andy

Well, I don't mind whether it's a startup or a well established company, as long as I can change my immigration status soon. Now I'm somewhat in a hurry to get a job offer in NZ, because my wife's gonna give birth in January. Only with a job offer can I change my immigration status and have my maternity expense covered.

Yes, I've started it and see it as a way to get NZ talking about
Node.js and to get the world to talk to us about it too!

I didn't realise you could already find the site. Anyway, the plan has
a few things to it:

* list companies and their contact details who are using Node.js (in
case anyone wants a job)
* list independent contractors/companies who can do it for other people
* list interesting projects
* I think I'll write some articles and/or profiles of people, projects
and companies too

(The site is still incubating in my mind, suggestions welcome.)

The code is here but don't have a crack at pull requests yet since I'm
just adding the main design to the site. Soon.

* https://github.com/appsattic/nodejs-geek-nz

Cheers,
Andy

I wasn't really being serious about a CMS,
Of course the great thing about node is that it allows you to create new types of applications that
Arn't really feasible with ruby/php/whatever

Ah, sorry - I missed the tone. :)

But... automatically updating all of the clients looking at a page
once it has been edited and saved in the backend would be pretty cool!
:) We did do a variant of this for breaking news when I worked on
stuff.co.nz (a proprietary and very specific CMS for their news
specific uses) but it wasn't quite realtime - I think it polled every
minute for updates. This was about 5 years ago so it would be much
better now.
