Hi guys and gals,

Great to see a NZ Node group! Where abouts is everyone here based? I'm Queenstown & Auckland :)

I'm a recent node convert after too many years of PHP making a bitch of me, and Py/Django/Flask/etc just being a touch too "niche" and backed into a corner for mainstream web use. I must say I'm loving it. While I would be the first to admit that npm is not quite as mature as dpkg/yum yet, it is a vast improvement over the PEAR/PECL and pip/easy_install mess.

Anyone keen for a coffee / beer some time?

Wulf

I think there are a few of us here in Wellington, a couple more up in
Auckland and the odd person elsewhere (now including yourself). :)

I think npm and dpkg/yum are solving different problems (or the same
problem in different ways - it's a sensitive issue to some). :) But
yeah, you're right, it's still newish and still learning but I think
is is mature in what it is doing. In fact, it really appeals to the
way I think about development these days - not quite on my wavelength
with deployments but getting there.

Yeah, let us know if you'll be in Welly ever, and there are definitely
some people in Auckland who might like to meet up. Not sure if there
are any more in Queenstown though!

Cheers,
Andy

Cheers Andy,

Will definitely drop a line when I'm in Welly in a few weeks :)

Fully agree that npm and {dpkg/yum/etc} are doing different things, but the grumpy old man in me is starting to get sick of how diverse package management has gotten. Sure, having package management is far far better than the days gone by of none at all, and it's far from an easy problem to solve (source code dependencies vs binaries spanning a plethora of OSs), spanning multiple usage cases but as I type right now with only my MacBook and Samsung S3 I have: Google Play, Apple App Store, npm, homebrew and Adobe (Creative Cloud). I dream of a near future where I can '$ packagemangler --upgrade-all-the-things' and go back to surfing HN....
