We get a number of questions from users about using Nodal on Microsoft Windows. This post provides some basic information to help you use Nodal effectively on windows.

Nodal generates MIDI data and can synchronise to MIDI clock signals to ensure accurate timing between applications. Transport functions (start/stop, rewind, play) also work.

For Nodal to communicate with another application via MIDI on Windows, you need to install some software to enable virtual midi ports, since Microsoft doesn't support this functionality by default in Windows. This allows Nodal to send and receive MIDI from applications such as virtual synths and DAWs (Ableton Live, Sonar, Reaper, etc.)

Here are two alternatives:
- Virtual MIDI http://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/virtualmidi.html (actively maintained, works for 32 and 64 bit OS versions, Windows XP to 8 compatible).
- MIDI Yoke http://www.midiox.com (no longer maintained, although users report it still works under Windows 8)

You'll also find more discussions and other alternatives on KVR:

Hello,

Perhaps of interest: http://nerds.de/en/loopbe1.html is a free virtual midi driver and works (I use it with Cubase Pro 8.5, Windows 8) fine.
Just install, and configure it in Nodal for output, in Cubase for input. That's it.
