Havea 1.3Gb file, which plays on clients end and within the preview window. When I download it however, it simply says "cannot play file" and "not compatible with QuickTime player". Same file crashes VLC, will not play within Premiere or After Effects, nor does it work on a second Mac or a PC.

It's a link, however one of five video files; the other four work. The odd thing with this, is that it previews fine within the dropbox environment (same as the others) - can play it in there. However when downloaded, it has no preview image of the video as an icon (others do) and there's no way to play it in any player or program. Client swears it plays fine on their end.

To directly cut to the chase, it sounds like your media player (in your case QuickTime) doesn't have all the necessary codecs to preview to file. Can you try another 3rd party app or program to try to preview the same file?

I have a similar problem. I was able to download an 8GB .MOV file, which plays fine in the Dropbox browser, but halfway through the (30min) video the audio and visual freezes (using Quicktime) or crashes completely (VLC). Can anyone help with this?

Thanks for that, Daphne. I kept trying (using an ethernet connection) and eventually got two files that were workable. I suspect our broadband network in Australia is getting hammered by all the people working from home, maybe that's why I got a "network failed" message. If I have the trouble again I'll follow your advice, though. Thanks again, Peter

None of these recordings can be watched. I was able to watch a PBS show while it was recording but I was not able to watch the recording. When I move the cursor over the recording highlights. When I click it goes to the next screen BUT moving the cursor does nothing. No shows highlight.

Doe to cloudy weather today our antenna signal is weaker than normal BUT I was able to watch the PBS show at the same time it was recording. Could the reason we have had so many problems be a bad DVR?

Are you using a Roku by any chance? My 4th Gen would not play any recordings until I made changes to the sound settings in the Roku Ultra. My older TV apparently cannot display videos via HDMI with surround included. So I turned it all off in the Roku and now it plays recordings/Live TV just fine.

Don't worry - it's quick and painless! Just click below, and once you're logged in we'll bring you right back here and post your question. We'll remember what you've already typed in so you won't have to do it again.

I have multiple output devices, and Spotify was set to use a non-default one. When I'm gaming, I tend to set default output to my headset, and when I'm not gaming, I set the default to my home theatre.

Windows recently (as in, I recently discovered it) added a function that allows users to set default output devices per application. Example is attached. So I set Spotify to always use a single device, no matter what the default output is. I'm not sure why, but Spotify decided to no longer work with a non-default audio output source after working fine for a long while.

When I flipped Spotify's output to default, it started working normally. Then I flipped it back to a non-default output to see if Spotify would give me the same error again, however it didn't. This is the part that puzzles me right now; even though I managed to identify the culprit, it didn't trigger on its own; trigger is still unknown (poetic!).

I have a suspicion on that as well though, I think if anything causes Windows to change the default output device for any reason, it might have an unintended effect for Spotify if Spotify is set to use a non-default output through Windows' per-app based sound input/output menu. But it's just a suspicion about the trigger. Culprit is definitely setting a non-default device as the output device for Spotify, in my case.

If the issue persists, it'd be good if you could let us know if this persists using a different network (for example start a hotspot on your phone) and if you're able to play music on the web player. Also, does this happen to all your songs?

The mentioned apps aren't installed. As far as hosts file goes, it's a vanilla hosts file; no entries in it. I did another reinstall, same issue. No idea at this point. I can listen to Spotify through the Web, but compared to the Windows App, it feels gutted =/

We suggest that you head over to Settings > toggle on Show Local Files > toggle off all the sources that appear there > toggle off Show Local Files. Afterwards, make sure to log out > restart your PC > log back in.

Apologies, I was on an extended Christmas holiday. This fixed it for me too. For me, Spotify didn't even have an output device selected in that menu, so it wasn't able to output at all but its fixed now. Many thanks, @lyravega for finding the solution and to all others who chipped in.

Thanks for reaching out. Do you happen to use an external/dedicated sound card? If so, try and switch to the default one from the Settings and see if that works. Sometimes multiple soundcards can cause conflict for Spotify, which is when the error occurs.

I am using Opera 68.0.3618.125 on latest Ubuntu version. But I can't watch videos. For example on Twitter. Everyone says get libffmpeg.so and copy to /snap/opera/current/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera but I can't access this file even I'm in root access. Please help me.

Instead of replacing the existing libffmpeg.so (which might be undone by an update) I would suggest to create sub-directory lib_extra in the opera main directory and copy or symlink the new libffmpeg.so to this directory, e.g. (as root)

Edit 2024-02-24: This solution does not work anymore, at least not on my Debian 12 with Opera 107.0.5045.36. Here I have to replace the file libffmpeg.so in the Opera directory by another file (either link or copy) as mentioned in the posts above.

Similar to the other answers, except using a symlink instead of copying the library, is this solution from the Opera forums, Solving the problem of the Opera browser with video playback in Ubuntu and similar distributions (Linux Mint, KDE neon):

Usually the second step is to create a symlink for the filelibffmpeg.so, but since now the Opera browser delivers a file withthis name (but not solving the problem), we will delete it and thencreate a simlink to the new file. File deletion:

Find and extract libffmpeg.so in the downloaded package, then save it as libffmpeg.so in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera (the path may vary), replacing the existing file if it is there. You will need to do this with root privileges.

I'm having the same issue! Duplicating and playing immediately solves the issue (temporarily), but then if you close the preview and open it again, back to a blank title screen. Did you ever get any further help from this issue via Support?

As a test, are you able to play these WAV tracks with any other apps on the iPhone? Per If a media file doesn't open or play on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad - Apple Support, " if you still don't have an app that supports the media format used by the file, search the internet or App Store for an app that does". So this may require testing with the use of a third-party app that is known compatible with WAV format files.

That's disappointing. Someone else on a thread on here recommended Doppler, which I've just taken my first look at but seems like a promising solution in the interim. Solid, streamlined player that makes it easy to work with tracks from whatever source, either between your Mac or directly on the phone.
